Has anyone ever tested the theory that round eggs hatch out girls and pointy egg hatch out boys?

Kind of. A friend gave me 9 Marans eggs and told me 7 were girls (round) and 2 were boys (pointy). I'm thinking: "yeah right". I set the eggs, 7/9 hatched. The two that did not hatch were round. 3 months later, yep I had 5 girls and 2 boys. I don't know if the girls hatched from the round eggs or not cuz I did not believe it enough to follow through on experiment, but now it has me wondering.

I think it would be good to try the theory on an auto-sexing breed.

I have one SG Dorking Pullet--She wen Broody three times this year so not too many whit eggs. She is laying now though.

The Icelandics sound like Penedesencas and Amelias. Maybe they would be ok here....

I am also looking at Jaehorns.

I love the fact that they are still being called Amelias. Too funny. Amelia is watching from above with a proud beak smile.

i've just started getting white eggs (small now, but they should get larger) from one of my silver campines, they are a beautiful creamy white...

and poor Harold the CL was being mercilessly chased by the two Amelias, he's spent the last three days up on his perch fretting as they'd chase him any time he was down on the floor of the pen -- so i moved them back into the main coop (with Max the SFH, who they love), and put two less high-strung girls in with Harold -- they still bop him on the head if he gets too frisky, but at least they don't go out of their way to chase him around. hoping everyone will settle down.

and the Rcom egg turner wasn't working terribly well with the eggs double-stacked, or rather it worked fine but some of the eggs were being held in place by the stacked ones & weren't turning -- so i took six black marans eggs out, i figured i'll get enough blacks from the eggs laid by blue/black crosses anyway. there are still two extra in the incubator (22 total), will be interested to candle next week and see how they're doing.

and that's the report from here on Sonoma Mtn -- school has been totally crazy & i've not been on-line much...

Laura, do you have a spare CL roo? A guy keeps calling me looking for a roo but I only have the 2 I am using.

I think I like the Zebra chicken description much better. Much more accurate to me than Cuckoo? What about cuckoo says black and white stripes?

I am really wanting some of the Langshan from PetRock but I am waiting patiently. There are so many I want. I am thinking I may have to get rid of some of my breeds that I have two of to make room for others. My English Orps from Deann are so big and fluffy....They are super soft too, it is hard to get rid of such a nice looking, sturdy bird. Now that one is squatting (and NOT laying) they come up to me and wait for me to pet them the silly things. Kind of like saying...."hey! I am standing right here until you notice me". I really didn't think I was that manly!

Barred is supposed to be more regular while cuckoo is supposed to be irregular.

Many Barred Plymouth Rocks from hatchery stock are actually Cuckoo....

Good Barring will line up feather to feather giving the bird a more striped appearance.

Cuckoo doesn't.

Like Ron said, since they are breed for quantity more than quality the barring on a lot of hatchery birds looks more cuckoo.

Exactly...... Zebra chicken. Although that bottom one reminds me more of Salt and Pepper.

Slow Work Day so here are some pics. I hope I am not boring anyone.

First is Petunia and her comb. I just think it's cool looking.




Speaking of Combs. check out Willa's photo bomb....was trying to get another of Petunia. I am pretty sure when she holds her head up she doesn't see out of her right eye too well


and finally Rue...the Icelandic that I think laid the egg yesterday. I think her coloring is so pretty and since she ate from my hand yesterday I may have to keep her.







She is the smallest of my new girls, loves to forage and she is growing on me. I will be getting rid of some layers in the spring. If you want her and Hattie (who looks just like her but has clean legs a straight comb and a crest) let me know. She comes from eggs that Deanne bought on BYC from chickenguy ( I think was his name) but his stock came from Mary the Sheriff and someone else who I am currently forgetting but who also got in early on the Icelandic thing.

ETA the guy she got her eggs from was "thebirdguy" and his stock came from Mary and KathyinMo...how could I forget that?!

HI guys!!

We've been crazy busy. I home school all 4 of my kids so my free time has been...well I haven't had any. We've been working on Fall preps for the farm. We got our new coop done, chickens moved. Almost done re-homing my culls. Moved my Silver Appleyard flock to their own housing so I am able to collect SA eggs that are pure. Woot! We have a predator eating our flock. It has taken nearly all my sizzles and silkies. We suspect a bobcat since it's hunting between 9-noon.

Anyway had to pop in!
