I was going to say she has a baboon butt and then just before I posted, I deleted the comment!     She is my lap chicken but for some reason, she doesn't want me to pet her right now.  It must be uncomfortable!

Well leave it to me to say things I probably shouldn't. I have heard that the chickies like it if you help them pull off the feather sheaths as they grow out. I would assume it is like having your whole neck or butt fall asleep. Everytime you touch it it pokes you back.

Zoowee I didn't finish my comment about the baby monitor but I assume you are doing it anyway. Any unusual noises coming in from the monitor allow you to go running out with some sort of deterent in hand AND to see what it is. :(

It seems like since lawatt put her birds in lock down she hasn't had anyore bobcat issues. But the trade off is less free ranging.

Yep, sure am. I have 22 Wellies still going strong in the bator. They hatch next Wednesday.
I may need to talk to you about getting a Wellie cockerel!

I have 3 pullets who have just started laying but the cockerel disappeared from the farm a couple months ago. I love these girls! They are so friendly and their feathers are so soft. My only complaint is that they won't go into the coop in the evening with the other girls. They wait on the patio for me to carry them to bed!

I wish that I had the time to groom my girls but alas real life is demanding! I also recently found out that I have PMLE (polymorphous light eruption) commonly referred to as a sun allergy. I try not to go outside at all between the hours of 9 AM and 4-5 PM. My doctor wants me to be wearing UPF clothing even in the house. It has been a hard life adjustment because I love being outdoors!

Got my egg tonight when I got home from work. My daughter found it on the ground. I am pretty sure they aren't digging the bucket nest boxes. I guess I need to find a replacement.

They were so much louder than usual I had a feeling. My daughter came running back to me saying, " THERE IS an EGG! THERE is an EGG!"

Kids make life worth living I am tellin' ya!

If I wasn't on my phone I would post a picture, because I am sure none of you have seen an egg before.

It looks like an Orp egg because my other option is a Welsummer egg and it isn't that.... :)

The waiting is over. I can now move on.

Oh, please, email it to yourself and then upload a picture of an EGG if you can! My flock keeps producing these things I can't quite identify... :hide :gig

Well you made me go google that one. Hadn't heard of it but it must be fairly bad if he doesn't want you outside at all.

I get something similar but it doesn't happen unless I am in direct sunlight without hope of shade anywhere. But my sister gets it now too. I just figured as we age our skin changes and we become less resilient to things such as prolonged sun exposure.

I built my coop in the shade :).

actually, there's been no sign of the bobcat for at least 6 weeks, or maybe even 2 months -- neither me seeing it, nor hearing the birds doing their alarm calls when it walked by -- so i'm pretty sure it's moved on. while the contractor was working on the coop extension last week, the birds were ALL out ALL day long, for four days in a row -- they were SO happy, and since David (the contractor) has chickens himself, he was happy to see them running around -- and no predator troubles. she was likely a mother cat with kittens in a den nearby, and now they've grown and she's gone back to hunting over a large hunting range, which is their usual behavior.

the flock still doesn't get to free-range when i'm not home, and it's mid-semester and i'm not home nearly as much as i'd like -- but they get out almost every late-afternoon again, except for Harold who is learning manners in his new pen with his two new (older) girlfriends...
