California - Northern

I tried a bag of the feed from Costco--I do give mine soy and corn sometimes but not too often. They seemed to like it and it is gone.

My chickens are not too picky though.
I was feeding it for a while. I think it's the same brand I saw at Costco . NatureSmart or something like that. I was getting it at my local feed store before Costco had it. Mine weren't thrilled with it.
Now I feed Modesto Milling organic feeds. It's about 40 minutes from me, but I plan other errands around my trip. If I pick it up straight from them:$25 for 50 lb bag. From Feed store it's $35 for the same bag. My birds really love it

King Feed Freedom GMO Layer is non corn non soy and it cost me 22.4 per 50 pounds. It is a good price for non soy non corn and a good trade off from Organic since is is GMO Free.

The Hens do well with it.

I can't find kingdom feed anywhere close:-( but why is the common consensus no corn even if it's organic?

For me, They go down in badness from Soy Beans then corn and then wheat. Wheat is ok for them but too much causes watery manure.

All of the grains are ok for them but they have trouble digesting corn. Fermenting helps though. Soy Beans are toxic if the percentage is too high. Organic is better but still not great.

It is like fishmeal or flax--Too much Soy makes the eggs taste funny to me.

I have posted before about this. Do not feel bad if you live in a place where you can only get Flock Raiser or similar feed. The Chickens will be fine with it and it is better than Factory raised Poultry. I would try to get them some fresh greens though.

But wait! I have one more!

Not a common concern but feeding corn to white birds will tint the feathers. Our judge mentioned it a few years ago when examining a white Cochin. Another reason I don't have white birds.

DD's pigeons are mostly white, the only feed we could find on short notice has corn in it. I pick through it every morning picking out the corn. I'll be glad when this bag is gone but that may take a long time, we could only get it in a 50# bag, they get 1/3 cup daily. At least I've got room in the freezer for most of it.

She is soooo pretty! I will have to get a pic of my blue croad langshan. Looks similar in color.
These Australorps were crossed way back with Oringtons to get the Blue Gene. It was a lot of generations ago but it did make them a bit bigger. They also do not have quite as much of a curve and there is a bit of cushion.

They are still a lot closer to standard than my Hatchery Australorps.
