Zoo, i'm so sorry for your loss. I used to love Betty stories. Sounds like it is time to curtail free ranging until you catch your thief.

It is official, we have broodie soil around here. My new silkie hen, Pepper ( hat trick silkies! ) got here, and went broodie in quarantine. I gave her some chicks this week and they are all happy under her. MY 2 remaining original silke and showgirl hens, roxie and chatty cathy are both sitting too, and one of my jubilees hid 2 dz eggs and was sitting on them until I caught her. Nutmeg is also joining in the fun. Dont they know it is late fall and COLD???

Cackle, if your girl looks litlis its possible she broke the egg inside of herself and thats why she was wet. There is an antibiotic Dr peter Brown recommends to try and save a hen hat does that, but I don't remember what it is. If she stays perky I would think she just sat on something wet rather then broke a shell inside her.

Amypaperlady, hens take a while to get used to new surroundings. If they are feeling scared they like to be in a covered area. SOme of my girls STILL will not venture out after the attack, and like to stay in the coop all day now. If you are worried kick them out in a few days to explore, but they should be fine getting to know the new space slowly.

Chooks, gratz on the hatch! nice job!

Hah! Your chickens breed broodies, too! I have one pullet from you that has been crazy broody! I finally gave her the six chicks that I hatched this past weekend. She took them all under her then all of a sudden she freaked out and abandoned them. She would not go back in the dog kennel nest for anything so we rushed the chicks back into the house. I thought about trying later but she never went back to the nest. What a way to break a broody! I guess being a mama wasn't all she thought it was going to be!

Now THAT is the Pancake! See how her neck is down low? Yesterday was too high, not quite hatching time yet. Notice you almost have the wall to wall feathers too.

YAY for Peeps - I told you she would tell them shush!

Tonight when you go home mix up some scrambled eggs and put it right in front of her. If she has any steady ones she will call them out to pig out on the eggs. Then you can see them without disturbing her.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and comments. I'm pretty sure we just had a small prolapse, not a stuck-egg. It went back in during her hot bath and has stayed in! I don't know why her back end was wet. She did poo several times in the night (I put her in a cardboard box in the brooder to keep her warm since she was all wet). So elimination is not a problem. Planning to help her NOT lay eggs for a few days. She is now outside in the sick pen (covered to keep out light). Her midwife special cocktail is still all she has to drink. It ought to help. Thinking of feeding the tea leavings to the other pullets. It's got red raspberry leaf and nettles in it so I know it would be good for them. Wondering if the fact my chickens spend so much time ranging means I need to increase their calcium supplement. Suggestions on that?

Hahaha I know you did and you were so right!

Thanks for the advice on the scrambled eggs I will do that.

They are both Pita Pintas. The Pita Pinta is one of the best--right up there with the Marans X Dorking from last winter. It is a bit better than the Bresse.

Both are very tasty though.

Better than the bresse ? !!! Hmm I wonder if your info will start a small war ? Lol

I'm having a feeling al three serama are Roos. I'll post pictures when my ds wakes.

I'll be lucky if I get one basque this hatch. The air cells look so bad. I'll have to decide if a drive for eggs is up next or to set some quail...

So sad to hear of the terrible preditor problems. We had one of our four cats not come home last week . She was naughty and I have to say I don't miss her!!!! So much harder when you love them though.

Snow in the forecast this week.
