Bantams aren't a problem are they Ron? I remember you hatching them before or has old age set in again.
Bantams hatch very well. Silkies seem to have trouble with shipping, but I have hatched some--blrw(Blue Laced Red Wandotte). I hatched Silkie, show girls and Frizzles too but those were local pickup.

I have hatched:

Ducks, Guinnea hen, turkey and lots of large fowl breeds; some Bantams. I have been very busy....

Wild Mallards too! Those were fun--I had no Idea how long they had been under the Mom before the nest was disturbed.

Frizzles can be bred up from bantams - use the same breed/color and mix the bantam frizzles and the LF regulars. If they get the frizzle gene they will be frizzled. They may be smaller for a few generations, but I bet the quality will still be better than SH birds - without the hassle. Use a big LF girl and the biggest Frizzle boy you can find.

Also - you can get hatching eggs here on BYC on the Crazy 24HR auction thread that you can hatch and eat the boys. I bought OEs, SS, and Barnvelders that look like they are going to be VERY large boys. I have a few eating boys in there too - wrong color legs, two instead of the one I need, etc... When you get a broody hen go on there and see whats up for auction - you will have them within the week and off you go! I think you can sell the girls for laying hens if nothing else, or breed your own eating birds. If you want a big white legged Barnvelder let me know - I am still plotting his demise...

P.S. - we have a few people right here on this thread with LARGE incubators - you find the eggs from the birds you want and I BET they will be MORE than happy to hatch a bunch of them for you

That would be my suggestion for getting a large order of straight run chicks...

Great Information! Thanks...can you put a frizzle girl with a LF roo? I wouldn't want her to get hurt but I have two roos and do not need any more

I have hatched for others before.

Eggs are shipped to me and then I meet them with the chicks.
This is the best thread in all of the chicken world. So I think what I will discuss with Tom will be a bator hatch with some Bresse and some frizzle. Boys in the tractor, girls on the market.

The reason for the large girl and the smaller boy is the children will get their size from their mother. If you use a small girl with a LF roo you will get smaller adults. You CAN put a banty with big roos (I have lots all mixed up) and they do sort of get squished - but not hurt (as long as they are ADULT banties - not juvies - and the boys aren't too overweight). The funniest ones are when the big boys can't figure out how to do it right and just stand on the banty hens when they squat, its as if they are saying "where'd the hen go?"

Learn somethin new every day...Thanks for that!!!

And the nice thing about Bresse is they show their sex very early. Those combs grow fast on the boys! They also crow early, at least mine do!

That is soooooo cool!

This is a great story. Thanks for sharing it. I was in despair last spring when I thought I had two egg eaters and your story made me know that I had a shell issue, not a pullet issue so thanks!

and it just got cooler. Hatch dates on my two were May 20, and July 9 I think give or take so that would look like it may be Joan Baez in that egg.

Chiqita I would love to get Bresse but the issue is getting a dozen or so boys all at once and inexpensively. Maybe when I get my Brinsea I will hatch a bunch but I don't know who will sell me a SR of 15 Bresse chicks without it costing me all four of my limbs...although I am open to suggestions

Are you thinking of Mount Healthy? I have a friend who does the "buy, brood and resell pullets" thing and she gets hers from there. I also think Meyer is in Ohio...or maybe it is MM?

Holy Crow what a nightmare!!! What do you suggest as far as getting a large number of SR chicks that are NOT from vent sexing hatchery???

Do you think because I am mainly ordering the LF assortment that it will easier to fill my order if I do order through them.

Also I am hankering for LF Frizzle and have found 0 in the way of hatching eggs anywhere you think I should hatch some bantams then breed them to one of my boys and make my own? Does that even happen? We had a Labrador retriever that mated with a Dachshund when I was a kid would it be like that??

Hmmmmm more to think about.
ooops

Thanks. I have a pair of Dels from Kim and am looking forward to when I may be able to get some culls from her new birds from Kathy in MO. Plus, Deb and I have been in communication re NH pullets and/or hatching eggs. What I wanted with SH was the LF frizzle and a bunch of misc boys for my meat tractor. But I am pretty sure now that it might not be worth the aggravation.

Since my current plan is to only hatch with broodies, getting a dozen or so boys at once will be a crap shoot at best.

I think I will look at Privett and see what I see. I have been very happy with the chicks they shipped this spring. I have never shopped for anything but egg layers before so have no clue.

Thanks so much for sharing your story.
There were frizzled Ameraucanas being offered a year or more ago either on BYC or Ebay. Sorry I can't remember. You may want to try googling those to see if you can find them. They were LF if memory serves me right.

I have some frizzle showgirls and silkies but im not sure what im doing with them yet. Showgirls get along well with lf. No idea why...

Nutmeg is a terrible mother! One egg hatched and she got up off the nest. I gave her sine older chicks so they didnt freeze abd she had 2 drop out of her coop . I thought obe froze byt I popped it in the bator and it is showing signs of life!

I filled tge hoke she was showing them. Silly chicken!

Have Chiqita send them to me when you are ready. I am looking for eggs to hatch for the NYD hatch a long--I need to set them on Dec. 11.

Showgirls were bred by crossing a LF NN to Sillies - so they are related to LF...

I am sorry about Nutmeg - it sounds like she is being very bad. It took a bit of translation to figure out what you said... but I am glad you filled in the hole and saved the one that almost froze. My chicks think its a game to get out of holes and then get picked on by the chickens on the other side of that hole...
