I have some frizzle showgirls and silkies but im not sure what im doing with them yet. Showgirls get along well with lf. No idea why...

Nutmeg is a terrible mother! One egg hatched and she got up off the nest. I gave her sine older chicks so they didnt freeze abd she had 2 drop out of her coop . I thought obe froze byt I popped it in the bator and it is showing signs of life!

I filled tge hoke she was showing them. Silly chicken!
You need a hen like my BW Ameraucana. She is not a great egg layer but has found her calling as a mama. She has 3 chicks (all cockerels) who are over 10 weeks old and she is still taking care of them. They are as big as she is but they still try to sit under her wings at night. I finally closed the door to the brooder area today and forced them to go into the main coop with the rest of the flock. Cosette left her boys and joined the girls on the roost. I had to catch 2 of her boys and shove them into the coop. It will be interesting to see if she mothers them tomorrow or if that's it. I hope that's how it goes because the Bresse boy is crowing already so all 3 are headed to the farm some time this week.

Not a very good pic but this is Cosette and her boys!

Audio: I missed your post /hugs to you.
Petrock: nutmeg is the only vad momma I have. The rest are great. I think seremas just have bird brains. Snickerdaddy is trying to sit on them too at keast they are a cute family.

I finally figured out that the reason I keep finding poo in the nest boxes is that Quiche is sleeping in them (she's not broody--the only time she's in there is at night). The lowest roost is about a foot above the top of the nest boxes, so that's not the problem. I went out just now and moved her to the roosts (quite fun, trying to remember where I'd put the push light, since the sticky stuff wasn't--it was nearly pitch black in there). How many nights doyou think I'll need to do that? And how long will it take me to think to bring the push light into the house so I have it handy when I go out?

Which is why I put up roosts high enough that only an acrobat can get to them (or a flying bird) and why I am so worried about some of the just moved birds who insist on sleeping outside on the ground in the run instead of in the coop with the older birds. I am glad you solved your problem by blocking it so it can't get in.

I have a couple that try to sleep outside, but I generally run them into the coop just for that reason.....

If I didn't have to do acrobatics to get into that run I would do just that. However the only entrance is through the pop door - perhaps I should say poop door.. well, you get the idea. I need to cut a door in the fence so I can get in there. I just keep hoping they will get a hint and go in with the other ones.

I do not know why it keeps leaving up previously quoted posts... ah well, I fixed it (again).

Perhaps because there isn't any room in their teeny little heads for anything EXCEPT a bird brain? Next time give the eggs to the Sillies and let the Seramas hatch you some rain...

I cant deny a broodie hen motherhood. Its psychological....

Ahhh... that explains all your Sillies! Well, you plugged the hole - hopefully she can't do anything stupid again, but from others reports I have learned Seramas are terrible mothers - the fathers do better at taking care of the kids.

This is funny! We are arranging a hatch for @tommysgirl

I think I need to visit incubators anonymous.....
Hahaha hold the phone peeps. We have decided that we want to do it but off site sooooo I am in touch with a friend who will have empty chicken pens on her farm the middle of next month. I have to go check it out and see what is what and can't really do that till the people move out so I can't give you anything firm yet but.....things are looking hopeful. I just don't want to give you a commitment yet.

It is great having you all in my corner though...I will keep you posted
