So Ivomec given orally kills mites? I think I got one on me last night when I grabbed a chicken that didn't go into the coop at night...gross.

Hi Chrissy,

I am breeding both purebred Bresse and Sulmtalers. I am also planning to breed 4 Freedom Ranger pullets to a Sulmtaler rooster and then taking a Sulmtaler X FR Rooster from that cross to breed back to the Freedom Ranger hens.

I really like Freedom rangers. They are sweet birds and fairly good layers. My hens are also good foragers. I had a purebred FR rooster and my original plan was to breed the FR to the FR however the rooster got too big and his legs started to bow and he had to be culled when he got increasingly uncomfortable. Due to his size and awkwardness, I highly doubt he would have bee able to breed naturally.

I am hoping that crossing the Freedom Ranger hens with a Sulmtaler rooster will produce a solid dual purpose meat bird where the pullets can be used as layers and the Cockerels can be processed around 16 weeks. I am planning to put the birds together this week and if they are still laying next month I will set eggs for the NYD hatch-a-long.

Quote: For mites and lice, use pour on. Make sure to get it near the vent.

You still need to treat the coops--liquid permethrin can be sprayed every two weeks. I would treat the coops and then again after two weeks. After that, monitor the chickens for lice.

Yep, I have one on my counter. It holds large fowl eggs well, but it would not work for bantam eggs.

For lice, flip them upside down and you will see them around their vent. For mites, you have to go out at night to see them. It's likely poultry lice, and they cannot live on you, they live on feathers and feed on feather dander - since you have no feathers, you're good. They can live in the bedding for a very long time.

It may just be easiest to worm the whole flock and treat for lice/mites at the same time. I've used Ivomec topical wormer. It kills all the creepy crawlies and worms them. It's a topical, so you apply it to their skin between their wings. (not the feathers, but you have to get it on their skin)

Its not a bad idea to spray the coop ( or at least the roosts and wood parts) every month That way you can jsut use a spray bottle and do it fast, rather then scrub and have to get in every cranny and take hours. Be careful of it around cats, and if you raise bugs.

I was so grossed out took all of my clothes and threw them in the wash. It was a little black bug....ewwww.
The Lice on Chickens do not live on us. They do crawl on us though.

Treat for them soon before they become a swarm.

I just wormed my brown egg layers and my two new girls with Wazine and will follow up in a couple of weeks with that other stuff that I can't remember at the moment. If they have bugs...I don't think they do but will look ...should I followup with the topical ivomec instead?

At what age can I worm my babies...currently 3.5 weeks old. Can I do it with my colored/white pen in December?...Like 4 weeks from now?

Quote: I buy the pure stuff ( do not ask me how to spell it!) put whatever amount they say in a liter of water, and have a dedicated spray bottle and just spray it. I have one for oxine water and one for perm water. I however spilled my last bottle all over the cubbord, so I cant tell you dosage anymore.
