This looked like a flea type larvae. I was reading that neem oil on the roosts was good. Now I'm going to rethink that.
The article I learned about Neem oil from... http://naturalchickenkeeping.blogspot.com/2012/12/natural-way-to-rid-chickens-of-lice.html

I don't know what the larvae was it looked like it could be poultry lice as per this article http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/08/poultry-lice-and-mites-identification.html

I have not had time to go out and peel back feathers on the birds for ID.

Now I'm totally grossed out and feel that I have bugs crawling all over me! Oh groan! Would you treat the entire flock and all the houses? We've had the new birds for a week and I go from pen to pen regularly handling new birds so they get used to me before adding them in with the other birds.

If it is just on the birds I brought in, would you still treat the entire flock? How contagious are poultry lice, assuming that's what I have. I don't know what worm larvae look like.

Since my free range birds (actually, even my penned birds have enough space for dirt baths. No indoor caged environment at my house) can dust bathe -- and do vigorously -- will I need to treat them as well?

I'm balking a little bit here because I have 24 free-range layer hens and 3 small breeding groups. What about my broody house? Will I have to treat that? 30 + chicks...

When new chicken come into your place, they should be immediately dusted and then quarantined for two weeks. During the two weeks either worm them or float test and treat if worms are found. They should be watched for other sickness too.

If you mixed them, without quarantine, then you will need to treat the places and chickens that were exposed. You can start small and see if you see more bugs.

You can try no mite strips for the coops:

They control lice too.

I quarantined them but he was crazy so I put two of my quietest pullets in with him. He calmed down. He has not been with my other flock. My other new birds all go in a special quarantine pen with run. It limits my new bird purchases considerably

Only having one pen for newbies. Thanks for the tip. I will go out with close inspection tomorrow. My birds don't look mit-ie. Hopefully going from one pen to the other while we work hasn't caused problems.

Learning! Thanks again. I thought they had to be quarantined a month!

You just totally doubled my purchasing opportunities.

You might want to go ahead and make it easy by treating all of them with the Ivomec injectable wormer. It goes in their water for 2 days (4 cc per gallon) and kills worms and lice. You do need to follow up with another treatment in 14 days to kill the lice that have hatched from the eggs left on the chicken. This stops the lices's life cycle. You can read about it on Linda Hamid's website "Sweetwater Poultry" under Parasites.

Has anyone ever used an "Egg Skelter"? It looks kind of nifty but does not, apparently, fit well in a fridge so it would have to sit on the counter. I'm wondering how stable it would be,

Yep, I have one on my counter. It holds large fowl eggs well, but it would not work for bantam eggs.

Quote: For lice, flip them upside down and you will see them around their vent. For mites, you have to go out at night to see them. It's likely poultry lice, and they cannot live on you, they live on feathers and feed on feather dander - since you have no feathers, you're good. They can live in the bedding for a very long time.

It may just be easiest to worm the whole flock and treat for lice/mites at the same time. I've used Ivomec topical wormer. It kills all the creepy crawlies and worms them. It's a topical, so you apply it to their skin between their wings. (not the feathers, but you have to get it on their skin)

I read that as I have one on my COMPUTER... I was wondering how that helped with eggs!

Somehow I hae a whole bunch of eggs. What is a good make to take to work and party egg dish? Is there a egg heavy cookie or something? I dont think I can do angelfood cake, too messy. Or a really good deviled egg recipe?
