California - Northern

Thanks for the link. I am going to go over it.

Lhasa Apso! We have one of those. She does not shed, bark very little and is very smart.

Now I Need to get to the NYD Hatch a Long thread--it is getting quite busy.
What a nice puppy....... I didn't realize the NYD hatch along thread was already going....?

try this Alli http://animal.discovery.com/breed-selector/dog-breeds.html and then, if you are inclined, you can try to find a breed rescue group. non shedding is tough, less annoying shedding is easier. I am a doggie diva and find that there are three types of shedder. short coated like a Boxer or a Boston Terrier...they shed but it is light so though it is fairly continuous, weekly vacuuming takes care of it, Hampster shedders like a Sheltie (yappy as can be) or a Collie who shed in blobs that are easy to pick up and continual copious shedders like labs who seasonally become...I could make two dogs with the hair that came off of you shedders... We have the first two types of shedders and I won't have the third kind unless I am retired and have a housekeeper. Poodles and Schnauzers and other hard coated terriers are pretty non shedding but terrier dig and yap...it's how they roll. Boston Terriers are an exception quite smooth coated and a very fuuny and winning personality. I would look into them first.

Broodies seem to NOT be dedicated once their options were limited so my life is simplified. Norma gave me the angry bukbukbuk when I talked to her today and puffed up but hung out the back yard all day and was dissuaded from going back to her flower pot by the upside down bowl. Godiva had other interests all day so

Tomorrow I will post pics of my chicks. 4 weeks on Thursday for sexing input...I will buy a beer for anyone who tell me they are all pullets!
Everyone here has dogs along with their chickens it seems. Thanks for this info too.

So I think I am going with a mutt/mix. It is a Maltipoo. Nonsheader, small enough for my daughter to hold, and the jury is out on the barking. Ugh! Puppies!!! If I could have found an older dog all house broken and everything!

On a side note, they have a freeze warning out for some areas. I have the chickens in a coop but the whole top is open to the night only covered with hardware cloth. Do you suppose they will be warm enough? It is the first really cold night we will be having so far. I know they have lots of feathers and all, but I am freezing. I can't imagine they aren't cold too!

Yes!

I am hosting the NYD Hatch a long. Come join us.

The chickens will be fine in the cold. You do need to make sure they stay dry in the rain or have a place to go that is dry.

Congrats on the new puppy. We do need to see pictures....

All this talk of dogs reminds me I still want a dog!

But I am allergic to most of them, and don't have space for one in the current house, and my housemates don't want a dog anyway. This is why I got chickens for pets!

this past week I have lost 2 silver ameraucana hens. They where the darker versions. I have had a few coyotes trying to dig under one of the runs I think. ( I have seen them on a few occasions on my property )
It made it easy for the smaller silvers to get under the fence. I did not notice the spot till yesterday when I noticed the second was gone. Its dark when I leave and get home.
I shored up the spot and hope to have the chicken area completely fenced in with 6 foot no climb around all the runs and let the black penedesenca free roam in that area around the the breeding runs. this serves 2 purposes , I can release my crele penedesenca rooster ( from another blood line )
with the silver ameraucana's plus I have a few crele penedesenca from my line I will put in there. They will be in that run. The 3 black penedesenca hens and The rooster ( I call him the Big Fella as he is a load and very alert ) will have the enclosed area around the runs.
I am off Tuesday till Monday and plan to do the fence then. will take about 200 feet of fence.
I am bummed about the 2 silvers but still have 4.
I have to figure out a way to get rid of the coyotes though as I can not quite afford to fence the complete property yet and I need it to be surveyed first.
I do not like having the coyotes around having 2 young kids that like to play outside. So I am looking into legal trapping methods. I know I can shoot them.
These guys are scouts and I know there are more. the ones around here are way to gutsy for there own good.

Dig a trench at the fence line, attach the fence wire to a pressure treated board and cover it up with dirt. That is a bit of work where you live though...

Sorry you lost the Silvers!

was just 2 at least I have 4 still and think I found the issue .I have all sorts of half buried boulders around it.
Not as bad as the issue with the hawk at least but now the coyotes know there are chickens they are likely to come back and with kids I do not like that.
getting the runs enclosed will protect the chickens but coyotes will stick around probably until you make a example of one.

anyways. Kittens are crazy. Lewey is now 5 months old (well in 5 days ) and is getting big. He is going to be a big guy I am sure

My GL Wyandottes were the SLOWEST to feather in ever. I was sure they both were males - and one even had curly feathers coming in on the wings - I thought it was a FRIZZLE! They had chick down and bald spots forever, everybody else had all their feathers and those two still had chick fluff - but they finally did feather in. They both turned out to be girls. So - on the Wyandottes I am not even going to guess - because they could both be female.

The cross.. well - that comb says boy to me.

Oh - I had to laugh at your blaming the broody for the sex of the chicks hatched.. although the female is responsible for the sex - the incubator isn't.... I did notice that I had a LOT more boys than girls in the shipped eggs though - I think the girl embryos are more fragile?
Now this provides me with some hope! Thanks! On the SPW thread is a guy named "bluegum" and he is the original source of the stock for the breeder from whom I got my eggs. He says #1 is a boy but I didn't post the pics all at once over there and no one has commented on #2 yet. I hope that I get half the result you got anyway

Other Wy people have told me to chill for another 2 weeks and it will all be revealed.

The little cross has acted like a boy since it hatched and I know the comb is pronounced but it is yellow so I am choosing to stay in denial.

Don't you just love people who ask for opinions and then they only accept the ones that agree with what they want to be true.

However in the event that I again have an all boy hatch, I hope Wyandottes are tastey. I am curious how the little cross will fatten up.If it is a boy it will likely be the first one we eat that we raised and its mix is BR Leghorn and Del.

I am glad I made you laugh with my joke about the broody being responsible for the sex. This broody WAS the incubator...total surrogate so she is completely absolved. Interesting about fewer girls in shipped eggs. In my first hatch with shipped eggs I got two girls and boy BUT that was a Chooks Chick ship and she used the "Great Egg Shipping Experiment" method so all of the embryos were probably better protected.
