That's good to know! These Pita PInta boys are loud and early crowers compared to my Langshans. I would really like to keep this breeding flock here with me but I have to find a way to keep cockerel quiet. I also caught the boys doing their business with my crippled splash Langshan. I'm thinking about throwing them out into the yard with the big girls. That would sure keep them busy running away from the hens. Maybe they would be so busy that they would forget to crow?!
Nice egg Ron ( well they are all nice ) I am only getting a few eggs from my silver ameraucana . Still have some molting . Its ok I decided to worm yesterday since there re no eggs. I am going to get some fencing in a few to finish the black penedesenca run.
In my experience ( I have had Black , Crele and partridge ) plus white empordanesa. The empordanesa and partridge hold egg color well. The crele are ever changing. ( I need to add some darker genes to mine . I had only had blacks laying a few months before there molts and they have not started back up yet. They had started really light which was a bummer since I waited so long to get them. However I was pleasantly surprised how dark they got. However I am not sold on the quality of what I got so I may start over with better birds from some of my friends back east. But the eggs got pretty dark.
Well crap!
I think we lost one of my jubilees yesterday. My guess is the bobcat is back early due to the lack of prey. We are leaving for So cal today ( my dad had an operation so it is christmas at his place) so everyone will be on lockdown till after xmas. But I might have to extend it for the free ranger for another week. THEY are gonna be ****** at me.
About 2 hrs after I found her gone someone offered us a rooster to go with them too ;/
This is not my week. Hopefully thats the last of it, I don't want a ticket driving to so cal.
How old are your Langshans? Mine don't crow or lay until around 30 weeks. I only have 2 crippled Langshan hens here in town. The rest of my flock is at a friend's 10 acre farm. I sure miss seeing my big blue cockerel Thor.

About 3 weeks ago I got my first egg from my flock of 7, then yesterday I got my first brown egg, meaning one of my Speckled Sussex had started laying! Of course it's possible that it's one of the Light Brahmas, but I suspect a SS because they had both started squatting a couple weeks ago. And then today, I went out to collect eggs and what do you know - THREE eggs in the nest box! So I had one hen start laying 3 weeks ago, one start laying yesterday, and one start laying today! I think it's the Splash Andalusian that started today because her comb has gotten very big and red the past couple weeks. I had originally planned on selling this hen, however she is absolutely beautiful. Even though she's flighty I don't know if I'll be able to bring myself to sell such a beautiful girl, especially considering the fact that she has two different colored eyes!
The first egg we got yesterday was a plain, medium/light brown color. Today I got another egg of the same color, but this one was speckled meaning it was for sure a SS that laid it, if I'm correct.
What I'm wondering is - does the fact that the egg yesterday had no speckles and the one today DID have them mean it was two different chickens? Or is it possible that they are from the same chicken, & she just didn't have speckles on her first egg?

It is hard to say. First eggs are not what they will become usually. The brown coating can take a bit of time to get going like it will. Although a pullet will lay similar eggs, no two will be exactly alike.
Beautiful eggs everyone! I got one egg yesterday, that's right one egg, lol. It was from my Aseel, and my daughter dropped it on the kitchen floor. Oh well, the dog got a treat lol.
OK in the seemingly never ending saga of "what the heck is this???" AKA "Why won't tommysgirl admit this is a cockerel?" I submit the 8 week three day pic of the SPW chick that I am still hoping is a pullet, Your thoughts are as always appreciated but if you tell me this is a cockerel expect that I will take new pictures weekly until this bird lays an egg or crows. The hatchmate is darker pink and has more developed wattles.
