Oh my gosh I got them today! Are you sure sure sure they can't climb?? Lol
Haha,well....as long as your sides are smooth. Like a new plastic bin. I put them in a dish to take to the birds and it had rough sides from calcium build up. They started climbing that.

Ok I think I'm good with the bin then. Made it through my first night with them in my room without any nightmares lol!

I have questions again: I constantly worry about housing these days. when we cover our big run with the big coop all will be well but in the mean time...

**************Everyone ranges for hours every day unless we are OOT********************

I have a 3X5 elevated hen house style coop in a 9x7 covered run. It has plenty of roosts in the run as well as the ground space. It is my original pen and back then it was for our original 7 girls. Then 7 plus Ray, then we lost a girl, then we lost Ray. But got a whole crop of new chicks

Then we built a new coop and moved those 6 originalgirls into the big uncovered run and none of them can fly out of the pen...That pen and coop can house 20+ without anyone feeling cramped so I added in Ozzie and three additional pullets. So Oz is in there with 9 hens/pullets and the three cockerels that Beakface hatched in Oct.

Now in the original coop/pen I have housed most of my remaining 2013 pullets (7 of them) all of whom are flyers and The General, a hatchery NH rooster I rescued from a bachelor pad at my uncle's. So that makes 8 in that pen but then there is Norma. She was in the big uncovered pen but she is a flyer and she was at the bottom of the PO with those girls. She has decided she like it better in the smaller original pen but I worry that she exceeds the carrying capacity.

In that pen I have:
2 EE (who are the largest in there but smaller than my Dels and ALs in the big pen)
1 OE (Willa, my Amerlia)
2 Icelandics. (one is barely bigger than my 9 wk old cockerel chicks the other a bit bigger)
1 California Grey...about the same size as the larger Icelandic
1 mutt who is also about the same size as the larger Icelandic
One NH rooster who is bent on making up for the time he lost in the bachelor pad
and now little Norma has moved in. She is also smaller than my Dels and ALs

No one is pecking anyone in the small pen and they are a very simpatico little group. they seem happy but Norma just moved in a few days ago and I am worried that when I go back to school after Christmas vacation and they are penned up for more hours during the day that things may go south. Am I borrowing trouble?

Also, once we get the big run covered....whenever that may be I want to put Ozzie and Harriet in my third pen...currently the Dorking Domicile... How long do they have to be in there together before I can be assured that the only one who has fertilized her eggs is him?

Also how many others should I put in with them so that she doesn't get overmated?

Thanks You Guys!

If they are fine now they will be fine when school starts up.

We talked about this on NYD hatch a long thread.

If there is one new rooster, 14 days plus 3 for eggs to move through the Hen's reproductive system. after 17 days or so most of the eggs will be from the new rooster. If you do not have a Rooster with them, the eggs that are laid will be fertile for at least 15 days but up to 28 days. I would collect the eggs after 17 days and run a fertility test of several of them. If they are veining after 5 days, start collecting for selling or incubating.

This is based on a Modern Poultry study and not a 100 year old book, LOL.

Thanks so much you guys...how many girls in addition to Harriet should I put in there to keep her from being overmated?

I am not too worried about any of The General's babies sneaking into the mix since they will be Red Stars and I will be able to find homes for the girls and will raise the boys for the table. I don't think I am in a position to sell hatching eggs quite yet but I hope to be able to do that. Right now I just would like another good quality Del Pullet or two for myself.

Thanks Ron for the housing advice. I figured 15 sq feet of coop plus 72 sq feet of run plus ample roosting in the run would keep everyone happy but I wanted to find out what you all thought.

My Speckled Sussex pullet is a ranging fool! Even in the enormous pen she is in she wanders up and down the fence line looking for a way out until I give her one.

So the other night I went to get something out of my car around 9pm and there was a gigantic raccoon in my front yard! Guess I'd better cover my run this weekend. I've never had any problems with predators but don't want to wake up to chicken parts either. Ugh.

Ok, need help determining what these are. The bresse I'm pretty sure 2 boys and 2 maybe 3 girls. But here are the pics of my two lone breeds. Pics are with my phone so not as good as I'd like. One is a half jubilee half CL(we think) . Not sure how these will show. The jubilee mid has a different comb type and it's always been really orange. The other is a splash marans
