tried to take some better photos of the new chicks -- it's so dark out today with the rain, hard to get enough light for clear focus -- but here they are:

two birchen marans

already looking for trouble!

splash isbar, trying to figure out how legs work

black isbar, and TINY -- it was the last to hatch

and two blue isbars, full of personality already (if not in perfect focus)

Nope. They hatch like this: Then flop down onto the bottom of the bator. I've had much better hatch rates since I started hatching this way. No more egg soccer going on. Sometimes the ones that hatched earlier make it back up onto the cartons to talk to those that haven't hatched yet.
AWWWEE! That's is such a cute pic!!! I'm so hoping to see this tomorrow! Day 20 today and I don't here anything.... :| I just filled the second well chamber and put a rolled up wet paper towel in there. Is that all I'm suppose to do? I sure hope some or any hatch!

I have GOT to stop looking at the 24 hour Auction Thread. Oh, and all things Chocolate. I'm thinking of all sorts of pens I need

they are very easy! it's my grandmother's recipe: 2 cups flour, 2 cups milk, 4 eggs, and a bit of salt. bake for first 15 min at 425°, then reduce to 350° for another 15 min or so. i usually make a quarter of this (1 egg, half-cup of four & milk) for just myself, but absentmindedly poured in a whole cup of each this morning -- so had to add a second egg and just make lots. they smell amazing.

I made some! But one key question I didn't ask... how do you prep the pan? Butter? Mine were quite a challenge to get out... Also I probably played with my batter too much... they didn't pop over much. Still tasty. :)

yes, i use a regular cupcake pan but butter the cups -- and sometimes they pop better than others, i *think* the key is not stirring too much, and then a good hot oven to start with. but there's much debate on the internet about what causes them to best puff up!

Oh wow that's cool! I don't really want to remove it per se, just take the edge off. I'm wanting to help protect the girls from treading. So I was thinking about using a pedi paws technique on their toenails and maybe spurs.
Dremmel works great for spurs. Don't use a saw attachment use the cutting wheels. Use almost anything for toe nails I use a cutting type of pliers so I can open them up to accommodate birds with large nails. If you cut to much they will bleed.

For spurs, I didn't feel it really helped. Did it a few times years ago. I felt the one underneath was sharper, although shorter. It came off way easier than I expected though. I felt the nails were a bigger problem for then hens backs. None of my boys ever tried to spur me
