One of my nicer Dork pullets has a serious injury on her foot. It looks like she caught her center toe on something and almost ripped it off. The laceration goes 2/3 of the way around the toe.
I didn't see it right away. She's out on pasture (which is dirt, due to the drought) and there was all kinds of yuck in the wound. Infection has set in and the foot is swollen.
I noticed her limping and brought her in the house for treatment. My husband tried to scrub all the gunk out of the wound, which made it start bleeding. Bandaging a 5 toed fowl is a challenge.
Her behavior is normal. She watched him cleaning out the gunk with curiosity, I could barely watch. She seems perfectly healthy, other than the foot. She's not eating her chicken feed but scarfed down the cat kibble he gave her.
She is one of my first Dorking pullets to reach Standard weight, so I want to try to heal her foot and use her for breeding. I don't usually medicate chickens, but I want to give her an antibiotic to help the wound heal. My vet doesn't deal with chickens and would just tell me to cull her. I can't afford UCD vets.
What should I use and where can I get some penicillin or appropriate antibiotic for poultry?

Since you know what it is you could do 2 things.

Vetrynician on the wound 100% but it is already infected so it isn't going to cut it.

I would inject penicillin by weight and use a triple antibiotic ointment on the wound. You want it to heal inside out. I'm pretty sure I lost sparkles from wounds healing over themselves and leaving pockets. Rip little crazy momma hen.
If you think she is in pain get poultry aid as a pain reliever spray on. The penicillin is a bit of a pain through a chicken needle so do not go too small better to hurt her a bit then not be able to get it out. Needles might be the kicker we passed some needle law and I could not get tiny ones from the drug store for chicks anymore I'm not sure if it will make tractor needles harder.

All that should be availible from tractor supply. If you can't get it how close are you to novato? I can do a trade off it looks like I will be up maybe thursday.

That's great that you do cakes! I took the classes and bought all the fancy pans and equipment about 5 years ago. I did a few cakes over the next year and then started having symptoms of Rheumatiod arthritis and Fibromyalgia. I can't stand on my feet for very long and definitly can't do all the fine handwork required for cakes anymore. I just packed up my supplies that were taking up an entire cabinet in the kitchen and put them into a storage box to put in the garage last week.

It makes me sad, but I was forced to redirect the attention to chickens...

Look up the dosage, but Penicillin is for wounds. I think it is 2ccs injected into the breast. You would only need to do this for a couple of days.

Anti biotic ointment without pain killer for a couple of days and then switch to Vetricyn Gel until the wound heals. Chickens have all healed up nicely for me so far.

I love the Delawares & always told myself if I could have only one chicken breed it would be them. I lost my rooster after selling off all my extras that free ranged so now am begging a new one of off Lotsapaints in Paso Robles. I have 3 pullets & a hen waiting for their mate.....LOL

sad to report that the little black isbar chick, the one that hatched later and slower than all the others, did not make it -- just not strong enough. but the other five are doing great at 5 days old.

I was inspired by your flock's color palette and am copying it. Can't wait until I have some "Watt Line" silver and black birds running around my yard.

Is the black Marans pure black? I would love a darker egg layer in splash or black.

So so sorry she is hurting. Soaking in an epsom salt solution promotes healing and sort of creates a better environment for the topical antibiotics to work.

You can buy oral antibiotics at the feed stores.

They are the best!! Good luck on the "man hunt" for your girls. I picked up one of my Del pullets last night and just carried her around with me. She buried her head in my hair and made those sweet chicken sound

She had the beginnings of bumble foot a few weeks back and has taken a laying vacation. But she lays beautiful...sometimes speckled med brown eggs. My other Del layer lays an egg with a pink bloom.

Post 2 has wound treating instructions. The anti biotic section:

Quote: Penicillin is given in the muscle (IM aka intramuscularly). On poultry/waterfowl, the best place to give the shot is either in the breast meat or in the thigh. I prefer in the breast meat as there is a great deal of meat, little bone, and few blood vessels.
Clean a spot far from the bone, in the middle of one half of the breast, with a tiny bit of alcohol on a bit of tissue. Uncap the syringe and put the needle into the skin not terribly far. Less than ¼ inch for sure. Pull its plunger first and look for blood. This is to make sure the needle is not in a blood vessel. If you see blood, withdraw the needle and move the injection sight. Repeat. If you don't see blood, push the plunger in and then remove the syringe from the bird.

Pen G procaine is given daily for no more than four days. The dosage for poultry or waterfowl (under 10 pounds) is listed as less than 1/4 cc if the Penicillin G Procaine is 300,000 I.U. (which is most often is) for animals from 1-10 kg (each kg = 2 pounds, so 1-20 pounds). The dosage is actually listed as 1ml (cc) per 100 pounds of body weight, but giving 1/10th of a cc would be troublesome and it has a high safety margin.

Should be able to look it up but it is not dangerous to overdose a little. I injected into the area of the wound when it was foot for some long vet reason I don't remember but I don't know if it's a big deal.

thanks! i don't mind at all, but i'm not sure the answer will be of much help -- for these most recent pictures, i was using my barely-working Canon 350D (very very out-of-date digital SLR) with my dad's old 1970s-era Pentax lenses -- most were taken with a 50mm, a few with a 35mm. i had to get an adapter ring to be able to use the lenses with the DSLR, and of course none of the automatic settings work with the old lenses, and my eyes are getting bad enough that the focus is often a bit off -- but that old glass has a look that none of the newer cameras can replicate!

If you have this handy **This is just what I know I've given.** I was surprised that when our dog and cats needed it, the vet prescribed Keflex (Cephalexin) for them. And the vet charged me like $50 for it too! I've used it in a pinch. I believe they come in 250 and 500 mg capsules.

I know Clyndamycin was also given to my dogs before. NOT sure about cats, but this chart mentions that too for birds. Just be careful and double check if you ever use any of the other meds they list. I've never used all of them and would be leary at first.

Yes it is tough working with fondant. I try to do it for special occasions for the ones I love. That makes it worth it. Here is the pic.The toys are just toys, but all the detail and chocolate shells I made. Since there's fish in it and they are the "chicken of the sea", I hope it's ok I post

I haven't gotten the hang again of answering a single post. I guess I took too long a vacation from the boards but you guys all feed my addiction so staying off was a big help. I cut down a lot.
What I am trying to do was respond to Kim (Capavalleychick).....Yes, I did get ahold of Denny (Lotsapaints). Everything is fine & she has a pair of Palm Turkeys for me & I am trying to beg a Delaware rooster from her. She has been busy & Bob is working a lot so she hasn't been free to leave him with her critters & go away much. I am thinking of going to Paso Robles if I can con some chicken lovin' friends into going along. We will see they are coming over tomorrow to help me get ready for the Fresno show.
