@SunnyDawn is in Reno

It is great to have you here!

Okay, just in case you haven't already read...The Chicken party at my house here in Turlock has been set for May 18th 11 a.m.
I will do roasters full of some kind of chicken like last time.
Bring side dishes like salads, casseroles, fruits, veggies etc. Or you can bring desserts, soft drinks and snacks.
We will have a free raffle again so if you have anything chicken related you want to donate feel free.......... we accept all donations....LOL
I hope to have a fodder feeder set up & a greens tray with a wire top for inside the pens & put them on the raffle table & crafts of course....
My daughter says the snow cone machine is still doing great & I have lots of different syrups for it. The kids loved that last time.
Cari (my daughter) wants to get a cotton candy machine. She has lots of kids parties out at the pool.
The kids all had fun swimming last time while we all "chicken talked" so be sure to bring swimsuits & towels for them.
I hope a lot of you can set up trades, buys, sells of all different chicks, eggs, etc. I am hopping to get a few new, never had before breeds just for different pullets for the layer pen...........maybe Caliornia Grays, Pinta Pitas, Cream Legbars, and Isbars. ....LOL a lady can dream can't she????......LOL
We try to do a meet & greet go round to make sure everyone knows who & "where from" everyone is & what breeds they have.
Anyone that can come please RSVP to me on private message or call 209-667-6667 and let me know. I will be keeping track to have tables & chairs etc.....
Please feel free to share any fun ideas or suggestions with us. Any questions please contact me. Julie & Teresa from Madera are helping too.

I would like to see someplace where we could all post what we are bringing to trade/sell/donate. Maybe a special thread?

i don't think bird sex has the same, um, dynamics that one might expect -- since there are no moving parts involved (we're excluding ducks etc. from this). it's a very practical exchange, their cloacas (aka vents) only touch for a moment. so i don't think either gender gets any sense of conclusion as we would generally imagine in a romance novel etc.
I sure have some young POL pullets who think that my rooster Zoro is all that! They follow him around and squat for him if he even looks their way. Funny thing is, he doesn't often want those girls. He keeps trying to court my 3-4 yr old hens. They aren't going for the cougar/puma thing!

Sounds like he has high standards ans doesn't go for loose women! Either that or he just likes a challenge!

It's pretty funny to watch my small EE beat his butt! Today he was chasing my head hen back and forth across the yard. She rules with an iron foot when there is no rooster around. I've noticed that the flock is much calmer when they have a rooster to watch out for them and break up any disagreements!

Quote: Sounds like a case of "Chihuahua Syndrome". I really wish I could have roosters here. My blue Wyandotte is usually the top hen, but she goes broody often. When she does, one of the other hens will try to make a power play. I even had one start trying to to crow last year.....now THAT was funny!

We have this from a different perspective here. My mother is worried about a hens ability to enjoy fertilisation. She has asked several times about this. She is sceptical if I should keep roosters in light of this information. Tidbitting does not do it for her.

So if anyone knows of any scientific papers about a hens ability to Come to erm. ... a conclusion please let me know.

I think the roo gets a sense of "satisfaction". With our one boy, and close to 15 girls, everyone got a little "lovin'" but it wasn't too bad. Melvin protected everyone, and would find them treats, and get the nests ready for them. I felt like it was an okay trade-off for the hens to have to "lay back and think of England" for 25 seconds or so. Melvin wasn't rough with them though. He didn't pull out feathers or hold them with his spurs.

no question that roosters are highly interested in mating, and have lots of behaviors to look after the flock -- but it's anthropomorphizing (i.e. projecting our human emotions about the subject onto non-humans) to presume that he feels "satisfaction" in the same way we describe humans feeling satisfied after sex. there's certainly no indication that there's any equivalent of the orgasm (a huge physical build-up and release) in the avian world. but also nor should we presume that the females do or don't "enjoy" it -- it's just what it is, and some squat readily, some don't. they all have the some level of biological drive to procreate, which undoubtedly varies, but i really don't think that human ideas of romance or sexual titillation apply.
