Is this egg fertile?

Strange but true....... My #1 asked question from non chicken people is "Do you have to have a rooster to get eggs"........believe it or not.......LOL
I was one of "those" people, Thanks Grandma, I do answer that question a lot. The people I work with are becoming educated. They all know I have roosters.

I don't know if this is a good way to teach that lesson because it stirs bad images...but...my 15 yr old Grand daughter asked "do you need a rooster for Dazzle to give you eggs" I got that question answered by asking her " do you need a guy to have a "cycle" issue" she said no but that's different... And ended up explaining how and why the "cycle" happens. Lol

That's good. She may have gotten booted by the other hen. That is why I try to separate my broody. I only have 3 nest boxes and 10 girl so the nests are in high demand normally. I also have 2 broodies right now so they are both in the broody coop.
Actually it is funny. She gets up to eat drink and poo and one of her coop mates sits on the eggs long enough to lay her own then she gets up and give it back to mama. They are on day 20. I have a baby gate I may use to separate her when the chicks start to hatch.

Well it sounds like they have learned good teamwork! The 2 broodies I have will steal each others eggs when one gets up. The banty is only on ceramic eggs but I have other eggs in the 'bator and will let her have some chicks when they hatch....

Haha, yes. I agree with Ron. On awkward conversations 101 just mention that you have a beautiful rooster in your flock…..I made the mistake once of saying that I had decided to eat the eggs in July instead of putting them in the incubator. The science lesson was immense . It is really sad at how far removed from our food we have become!

We have this from a different perspective here. My mother is worried about a hens ability to enjoy fertilisation. She has asked several times about this. She is sceptical if I should keep roosters in light of this information. Tidbitting does not do it for her.

So if anyone knows of any scientific papers about a hens ability to Come to erm. ... a conclusion please let me know.

i don't think bird sex has the same, um, dynamics that one might expect -- since there are no moving parts involved (we're excluding ducks etc. from this). it's a very practical exchange, their cloacas (aka vents) only touch for a moment. so i don't think either gender gets any sense of conclusion as we would generally imagine in a romance novel etc.
