no question that roosters are highly interested in mating, and have lots of behaviors to look after the flock -- but it's anthropomorphizing (i.e. projecting our human emotions about the subject onto non-humans) to presume that he feels "satisfaction" in the same way we describe humans feeling satisfied after sex.  there's certainly no indication that there's any equivalent of the orgasm (a huge physical build-up and release) in the avian world.  but also nor should we presume that the females do or don't "enjoy" it -- it's just what it is, and some squat readily, some don't.  they all have the some level of biological drive to procreate, which undoubtedly varies, but i really don't think that human ideas of romance or sexual titillation apply.

This argument is getting some traction this morning laura ty.

HeeHee- I covered anthropomorphism AND gratification yesterday with the girls , though it was in English and science. Neither enjoyed the conversation... Perhaps if I used the analogy of the birds it would be more facinating to them? Lol byc incorporated into my homeschooling day. Love it!
Yay for burly baby chicks! I'm over here wondering about the gene dilution of the olandsk as they seem to require a bit more help than other breeds I have worked with at hatch... Shhh that wasn't ment to offend the breed... Don't turn me in.... I hear someone is working in importing a new line. I think berrytangle ?

Omg I got her first set of mixed chicks she shipped when she had a layer flock only back in the monthly egg swap. Now she is talking about importing?? Thats a change.
Congrats on the new babies!  I hope to haves some soon myself!

Question....My Brinsea is finally supposed to get her today.  It was coming out of Florida and I think all the weather on the east coast put Fedex behind.  The initial ETA on it was last Thursday and I asked about moving the eggs over to it when I got the Brinsea stabilized.  The answer then was "Yes" but the eggs would have only been about a week into incubation.   They are on day 11 now .  I know there are clear eggs and I will need to remove them anyway.  Should I still move them over to the new 'bator once it is stable?    Hmm......I just realized that if they hatch on time (the 28th)  it will be a "birthday hatch" for my  soon to be 4 year old granddaughter!

Yes should be best to move them.

Do shipped eggs known to hatch early or late? Or same as non shipped?

They are older so should be later. I find more shipped make it to the end and are too big to turn too. I wish there was something to do with those . :(

Ok Craigslist responder, my ad says TEXT or EMAIL, but instead, you decide to call repeatedly at 7:15 am?!

Omg never never put your phone #on a craigslist ad. Seriously go edit it off now.

It would be fine to move them.

Ya, they had a flock of OD for a bit but said to have lost them to a "perfect storm of events" .... Idk .... But now that I look back she was asking if there would be a market of interest if she imported her own line as green fire no longer carries them. I LOVE the adult birds so we shal see how hatching goes this spring and summer . I don't mind working on a breed but it here is a limit to what is workable for me.

So move them, I will! Thanks Happy Chooks and Chiqita!

Check out the broody mom this morning and there was chick 1 dead. It was a Del
hit.gif
I don't know what happened but the area between it's legs was all soft and wet looking. Not bloody though it had a bloody tinge. Any ideas? On the bright side someone else is chirping under her so the little one in the bator will have a buddy if it all goes well.

The little one in the bator is a surprising color. Dad is a White Silkie mom is MF D'uccle baby fuzz is grey and white. I googled images of MF babies and they look nothing like this one. I hope the color is somewhat of an indicator that this one will be colored similarly. I can't tell the number of toes but the legs are dark and feathered. Hope the other little one makes it out of the shell but so glad this one did. It was moving in there on Thursday night. Today is Day 21 so we will see what happens in the next couple of days.

How long would you leave this hatchling in the bator? Then should I wait to give it to the broody until I can see how good a mom she is and keep an eye on them? Not planning to keep this baby in the house for long but if I have to, I won't be at all sad about it.

Sounds like it did not absorb the yolk completely. Sorry for you loss

Awww...so sorry about the chick. If it hatched early that might be why it didn't make it.

Does this sound like what happened?

Symptom: Large, soft-bodied mushy chicks; dead on trays; bad odor

Possible casue: Low average incubation temperature.Poor ventilation.

Possible solutions: Follow recommended incubation temperatures.Increase ventilation rate in incubator and/or room, but avoid drafts.

Navel infection (Omphalitis) Clean and disinfect incubator and hatching units between settings of eggs. Maintain dry hatching trays. Properly store and fumigate eggs.

You have already gotten good replies on this! The one that died was under a broody? If so it was likely that something was wrong with the chick and it did not absorb the yolk correctly. It's Organs would then not start up like they were supposed to. The chicks heart, lungs, kidneys and etc. need to go from living off of the yolk to living on It's own. Sometimes they do not make the switch.

Wait until this evening and put the other chick under the broody. If she is in mother mode she should take it in without any problems.

I've had some problems here so rather than the planned single batch of chicks, I'm going to have two batches 17 days apart. My plan is keep them separate but close by chicken wire and work on bringing them together when possible. How old will the young batch be when I could try this?
