California - Northern

Congrats on the new babies! I hope to haves some soon myself!

Question....My Brinsea is finally supposed to get her today. It was coming out of Florida and I think all the weather on the east coast put Fedex behind. The initial ETA on it was last Thursday and I asked about moving the eggs over to it when I got the Brinsea stabilized. The answer then was "Yes" but the eggs would have only been about a week into incubation. They are on day 11 now . I know there are clear eggs and I will need to remove them anyway. Should I still move them over to the new 'bator once it is stable? Hmm......I just realized that if they hatch on time (the 28th) it will be a "birthday hatch" for my soon to be 4 year old granddaughter!
Yes! Move the good ones to the Brinsea and crack open the duds to see what happened to them.

The Styro Bator should be cleaned and sanitized(9 to one water to bleach solution), air dried and set up for hatching. This is a great system to use!

Will do!

I went out and fed the girls this morning and always have to move the boodies to the run part of the broody coope to make sure they at and drink. When I did so this morning I felt under the one on real eggs to be sure none had stuck to her. This happend on day 2 and I found the egg cooled off in the run. I thought I checked well this morning but must have missed one. Right after I set her down the egg dropped to the ground and cracked....a big crushing crack. It was one of the Mottled AM project egg. I picked it up right away and brought it the house, running through all the possible ways I could think of to possibly save it ( apply nail polish top coat, put Saran wrap over that part, etc). I candled it as soon as I got back in the house to see how far along it was and breathed a huge sigh of releif as soon as I saw that it was clear! I never thought I would be happy to see a clear egg!

I had the pleasure of meeting Karen (sewandgrow) this morning. It was so nice to put a face to the name. Thank you Karen for patiently answering my questions and adding to my chicken education.

I picked up a Brown Leghorn pullet to add some white to my egg basket. She's beautiful...

She will be in quarantine for 2 weeks. Her future flockmates are checking her out. They are all about 2 1/2 months old.

You have already gotten good replies on this! The one that died was under a broody? If so it was likely that something was wrong with the chick and it did not absorb the yolk correctly. It's Organs would then not start up like they were supposed to. The chicks heart, lungs, kidneys and etc. need to go from living off of the yolk to living on It's own. Sometimes they do not make the switch.

Wait until this evening and put the other chick under the broody. If she is in mother mode she should take it in without any problems.

Yes it was under a broody. Thanks for the information
Sounds like it did not absorb the yolk completely. Sorry for you loss

Thanks for the condolences Sounds like that is what happened
Awww...so sorry about the chick. If it hatched early that might be why it didn't make it.

It hatched on day 20 so not really early but thank you. That is something to keep in mind. I didn't know chicks hatch early I thought when it happened they were ready.
I've had some problems here so rather than the planned single batch of chicks, I'm going to have two batches 17 days apart. My plan is keep them separate but close by chicken wire and work on bringing them together when possible. How old will the young batch be when I could try this?
I would think at 10 days -2 weeks or so you could try but then watch for bad behavior. don't know what your numbers are but if there aren't too too many chicks it seems like the size difference might not be so obvious. Maybe integrate them at night then in the morning give them a bunch of crickets to chase so that there isn't time to squabble. I brought chicks together that were a week a part with no incident from day 1

Hi guys! I had asked this question a few weeks ago but didn't see the answer as it was right around the time I was moving, so I just forgot to check.
I'm looking to buy the following breeds as young chicks or pullets. Preferably as day-old chicks but I can't be too picky.
Anything that lays a VERY dark egg
Anything that lays a colored(preferrably pink or blue) egg
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte

Looking for all girls but I can buy straight run if that's my only option. The BLRW is the most important to me as I've been wanting one for a long time.
Does anyone in or near the Redding or Sacramento areas sell these, or am I going to need to order from a hatchery?
