My SFH grow-out pen is isolated from my other birds and I wasn't too worried about mites. The birds are glossy and beautiful! I had cause to check every bird on the property yesterday. The swedes had both lice and mites!

Worked until dark cleaning and spraying. Had to shower twice so I could feed the baby. It was gross and really hard work doing 4 separate pens! My scalp is still crawling. I had never seen lice on a bird.

Lesson learned - even perfect looking birds can be plagued with pests.
Good Job!

Keep us posted.

I agree with you on

. DH and Monet white washed the inside of my coop with lime last year. I'm thinking that I need to do it again this spring and also do the outdoor brooder area. It sure seemed to help control the creepy crawlies!

Feather lice are the grossest. Complete change of bedding, poultry dust on birds and bedding, & drops of Ivermectin - then repeat 2-3 weeks later - seemed to do the trick. Now I give them wood ashes to dust in as well.

Maybe someone with more incubating experience knows for sure, but I remember reading that still air incubators require a higher temp, like 102, but don't quote me on that.

You might try putting a chicken apron/saddle on her. I did that for Sass last summer when we didn't have Zoro. That reminds me, I need to make a couple for some of my Bresse girls at the farm. Bresse boys are very active! Here is one thread where they are talking about it. This is just one thread discussing them. Tere are lots of threads and also people who sell them just search for chicken apron.

I might do that if anything other than the feather tips disappear--though I'm not sure that would work for the back of a head

This is a bad year for Mites and lice. They seem to be coming in off of the wind LOL.

Definitely check to make sure they do not have parasites.
Well, I treated them with ivermectin because of suspected worms a couple months ago...

Eep! Will check them once I have a chance to research on here so I know what to look for. (I should be getting ready for work as of 5 minutes ago

I know earlier in the incubating process the temp kept dropping during the night but it only dropped to like high 90s and the chicks were still living so could they just be delayed?
