Great vigor for sure!I hate to tell you this Ron, but my hatch is beating yours outI had one pip this morning, went to the store and the little bugger had hatched already and more eggs have pipped. These OEs out of my Ameraucana hens x golden cuckoo Marans rooster are the hardiest chicks I hatch!![]()
I'm sure you will, and you'll have a great hatch too!Great vigor for sure!
I set them in the evening so day 20 starts tonight. I better see pips tonight!
Congrats on the hatch!
i had to help 3 ducks out and their umbilicus was swollen and didn't look pretty. I sprayed Vetricyn and it all healed really nicely. No issues whatsoever. I have heard of the exposed parts creating infection, but I believe the Vetricyn did the trick. I don't think it's safe to use anything else because other things can get absorbed into the body, which you don't want. Now the lady who walked me through the helping had me have an onion on hand. we thought the yolk may not have absorbed. didn't need the onion because the yolk was absorbed. she said an onion will help the yolk absorb and prevent bacteria from getting through the umbilicus. I didn't need to use it, so I can't attest to it's benefits. But I sprayed a few good squirts of vetricyn on the swollen area.I don't know how to manage bacteria free since it floats through the air and I don't have a vacuum box to work in. I used a clean from the cupboard bowl and ran some warm (not distilled!) tap water. Put a hot pad in the sink and set the bowl on top of it.
Put the chick in the bowl nestled on my fingers to keep it from drowning.
Cracked some of the edges of the shell off the membrane and kept the chick in the warm water to soften the membrane.
It got a foot out right away and it took less than a minute after that. Just that shell was SO stuck. It still has some bits of shell stuck to it.
I put it back in the bator in an empty egg carton hole. It immediately flopped out upside down.
The knee is rubbed raw but the umbilicus was good. As long as it doesn't get infected from its bath. I am out of gloves and I'm well aware that even clean, my fingers harbor a lot of bacteria.

I have one more that is obviously unable to get lose from its shell. I'll wait for a little before I get it out. I hate to keep opening the bator.

I think it is from a low incubation. Probably not feed issues from the flock. MJC hatched a bunch of our eggs (as have several other people), the professor said the chicks were unusually vigorous. They had a tremendous hatch rate too. In fact, one other person who bought our eggs said they always hatch, even the porous ones. So, I'm sure it is me and the incubator learning how to work togetherCarefully help it. Watch for yolk that did not absorb and hernias.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but temps too low during incubation is the most common cause.

Have 9 hatched and around 14 more pipped. It's hard to tell, there might be more as the chicks are laying on the unhatched eggs.
