Maybe I should do an experiment and put it in the bator pointy end up and see what happens?

It would be a good experiment!

The bit of research and reading on incubating said that the air cell goes to the wrong end sometimes and to incubate with the aircell end up regardless of which end it was in. Chicks often drown if the air cell is at the bottom because they will still pip towards the top of the egg.

I ended up with 23 hatched, which is a little greater than 30% success. Will have to work on that. One died and I'm watching 2 more that are little and not as vibrant as the others. I helped 6 and four of them are running around like little monster trucks so that was totally worth doing! The other two are the iffy ones.

3 Light Brahma's, a fertility test for a lady in town. I'd say her eggs are good :)

A little yin and yang. (Is that right?) The black is SO black! We THINK this is an EE topped by the Brabanter as he has black skin.

The far left is a GLW x ? Myster, and then the Brahma's and the black ones. They have to be Brabanter crosses. He's the only cockerel we have with black legs.

A pretty little Dark Brahma EE.

A whole line up of striped and freckled chicks. There is a GLW somewhere in here.

Here, from the top you can see one, maybe two GLW. That was a fertility test for them too.
Adorable!

Here's one of the girls from last year, I'll have to get photos of the babies coming up. They're even chocolatier... :)

I totally understand about more breeding pens, I'm always adding - never subtracting..
So pretty!

Future bareroot tree pallet coop build
My hubby just built me a beautiful coop from pallets! I love it! It's enormous and I can walk in it. I will have to get pictures. He has to finish the roof and make a gate into the run. The SFH don't care about either right now. The coop is 4 x 8 on the inside, over 6' tall (sloped roof goes to 8') and the run is about a 10 x 16, with the coop in it. So far, only 6 chickens in that space. It looks really big and they are happy! So am I :) I am totally loving the pallet coop design. It needs some perfecting but we will work out the kinks.

Even after having this breed for several years, I'm still amazed at the variety of colors and patterns that pop out. I'm like a little kid on hatch day with my face plastered to the incubator.

Quote: Liz, your chicks are beautiful!

Hoping to hatch (for the first time) some chicks from our little Serama flock. Was planning on using a broody bantam Cochin or Silkie, but they are young and may not be dedicated when the time comes. Are Serama eggs difficult to incubate? What type of incubator do you use or recommend? Would a broody be better? Any input is more than welcome!
