Washed 11 doz eggs this morning. That was my contribution to the daily chores

Was so happy to see the colors. I'm afraid I played a little. Gifting some to the people who helped us this week. Making up pretty flats to give away. Wish I had some Welsummers for their copper eggs (arn't they copper?) and some Marans for their dark eggs, maybe a Langshan (don't they have a purplish bloom?) and for sure an Isbar. Can hardly wait to see what my olive eggers produce

I just love colored eggs! In only need 8 more hens for the breakfast maker group. 2 of each of the above variety... The trick is to keep the head count down to 40 in that house! Pictures don't do the blue justice. They are a nice baby powder blue but they look washed out.

Gorgeous eggs! Wellies lay a terra cotta (clay brick) color. Barnies are more coppery.

Thank you everyone for your help with my sick rooster, unfortunately he died this morning

so sad.
I'm so sorry.

Warning! Be prepared for cuteness overload! Here are some pics of my last hatch!

Pita Pintas (Ron, have you ever noticed that some of the chicks are yellow with black and some are white with black? It is very noticeable with this group of chicks.)

Adorable!

I had a bit of a scare tonight... I'd had my older daughter check to see if all the chickens were in, and close the doors if they were. She came back in and reported that not everyone was in. I didn't worry about it, because it was still pretty light out, and the missing one was probably on her way. I went out to count heads after dusk, and there were only 4. I grabbed a flashlight, and looked all over the yard--under the shed, under and in the big cedar, and so on and so forth. I even tried to enlist the dog, not that that was any help

I was just remembering that I'd heard a bunch of excited barking earlier, that I'd identified as being in the neighbor's yard, when I spotted a closed plastic bin (the type with flaps). I'd already looked in all the logical places twice, so I figured, why not? Good thing, too, because that's where Quiche was. Turns out my younger daughter had put her in there, for which she said she was sorry. I'm just glad I found Quiche before anything else did!
Glad you found her!

hi you guys what is the website for Chickengirl in Dunsmuir? There is someone looking for a couple of breeds she has.

Liz, take him to the UCDavis lab in Turlock. It's behind the fairgrounds. It's totally worth the time and it's FREE. They talk to you about your bird and email you a detailed lab report once the autopsy is complete and the biopsy results are in.
For those that don't live close enough to one of the four labs you can FedEx them overnight using the UC Davis FedEx number and that will save a bunch on shipping.

That is interesting! I feed my flock sprouted oats and sprouted BOSS. I have been impressed with the size of eggs that some of my breeds are laying and my Wellies have beautiful dark terracotta colored eggs!
I do the fodder feeders & sprouted oats but don't even know what BOSS is.

Good going on your hatching Debi. Are you & Monet coming to the Modesto show today?

Wow - WAAAAY behind!

I saw some extremely kind posts and had to leave the computer and then lost them. Lets see if I can tag people on BYC -

Sewngrow, you are so kind to offer to help - and the use of your extra incubators - a totally lovely idea! Thank you for that. Yes, having my husband gone was probably the hardest part of all. We are blessed that he is working near home Monday and Tuesday. Then its another out of town marathon. This is not a normal aspect of his work and hopefully once the job is done, it is done!

Wendyjeepchick (okay these names are not linking - how do I do this?) You also offered to help. Wow! I am just floored at the kindness of people. Thank you for such generosity!

I think I saw a couple other offers but I was tired and couldn't go back to find them. Please know that your kindness rather restores ones faith in humanity. What a lovely bunch of people!

My church family figured out I was sick and we have been blessed with groceries. Thank goodness for that! My children were tired of eating whatever they could fix. One night my 9 year old made pumpkin pudding (pie with extra eggs and no crust). They ate an entire 9 x 13 for supper. I was happy. Eggs are good.

I am (hopefully) on the mend! Watching my eye closely but it looks like there may not be any lasting damage. The shingles attacking my eye rather worried me! But its looking good now! I may even be able to attend the chicken show Sunday for an hour or so if I feel like getting dressed.

So glad things are looking up for you. My hatches should be done by the end of this week & you can borrow one of the Genesises. If you make it to the show today maybe I will see you. I will have a long sleeve green cotton T shirt on. It is St. Patrick's day tomorrow right? & it is a 4H youth show. I would wear the shirt my daughter had made for my grand daughter's fair showing but it says Chatom Swine & is a tank top...brrrrrrrrrr.

I have a question about sprouted grains and can't find the answer myself.

Why can't I sew the seeds in the pasture among the bermuda and other grasses. Our soil is sandy and the grass is not dense; so the sprouts will be well drained and the bermuda won't choke out other plants.

When I'm researching the subject, everyone is going to alot of trouble rinsing transferring etc. I understand why that is necessary for
Supplementing in coops by giving them a tray
Of sprouted grains. But what about chickens that free range all day?
Wendy I think free range is best but, as you know, except for a few free loading free rangers, my birds are all in pens. It is up to me to provide all their needs. My fodder feeders & sprouted grains I consider minimal efforts & it makes me feel good to be making the effort to help them. I added calf manna & more oyster shells to all the pens yesterday. It is the first time for calf manna for my chickens. I used it for my rabbits years ago & love the licrorice smell........LOL

One of my EE girls caught her first mouse! I'm such a proud mama. I've never been so happy to see a 1/2 of one animal sticking out of another animals mouth.

Such a good girl too....................a keeper even if she lays a brown egg..... lol

I can never seem to capture the true colors with the camera either.
