Muscovies are kind of cool looking... Would 1 female be happy with only chickens for flockmates, or would I have to get 2? I'm guessing that, if I got a drake and only 1 female, the drake would try to add chickens to his harem, as well, and then I'd be down some chickens?
Mine have paired off and seem fine. I thought I would have to eat a drake but all seems well here in duckland. My scovies think they are people or ducks not chicken so no innaproprite loving here so far.
It doesn't take long to get (WAY) behind on this thread. I picked up the little Marans Chicks on Thursday. Do they look like Cuckoo Marans? None of them had any head spots. I have a question about one of my Silkie Chicks. I know @chiqita had a mico-Silkie a while back. How can you tell the difference between "just small", and failure to thrive? The little black one in the front is tiny. She is the loudest of all the chicks, and doesn't seem to have and issues. Is she just small?
I only worry at about 3-4 months. They are small bantams and grow slooowly.

It's Spring!

I have 5 Delawares out and two SG Dorkings. The UofA blues did nothing and had no pips this morning when I got up. I just checked, a couple hours later and one hatched and I see 7 or so pips!

The first one to hatch is Black.
I love spring and hatching chicks!

It was chilly this morning but I sat on my patio with my cup of coffee and watched my four week old chicks playing in their pen. My fruit trees are blooming and the air smelled so wonderful! It is a good day!

Wow - what a great excuse reason to get a duck. Safety first, y'know.

Yay Spring! Just let my laying flock out into a new field with lots of grass. They're like kids in a toy store.

LOL!!!! Sounds like you are encouraging people to be Egg Dealers..."the first ones are always free"...

It is all encouragement around here. Was it Chickens that are the gateway livestock? Or was it goats? I can't remember.

I think it is chickens.......Oh man...I hope not though! I only have 1/4 acre and already have too many!!!!!

Nope, no increase in treats. I have never wormed them before...they're about a year old now. Just under a year old, actually. I will check for lice and mites when my mom gets home in just a little bit. How do I check for them?
I'll also have her help me look at the vents and feathers. I know one of the hens has a bunch of watery poop dried onto her feathers but I assume that's not what you're talking about.

I just find it odd that they eat so much(eating normally) and yet none of their poops are solid. Makes me wonder where all the food is going.
