One of my clients' sushi chef boyfriend buys my Ko Shamo eggs for $ 4.00 each when I have some to spare, to make Ko Shamo Egg Sushi. The tiny Ko Shamos are very prolific egg layers, and they are respectfully large for their size. Their eggs are held on a high esteem by the Japanese. I am a vegetarian; eggs (infertile) have always been my, and many vegetarian friends' main source of protein.

I wish I had a another pen. I would LOVE to have some of those!! So neat!!

I have a question: is it true that geese and turkeys would deter some of the smaller predators, and raptors? In the past, we had geese, and mute swans, but at that time we didn't have fox, bobcats, and raptors visiting the development we are living in, therefore have no personal reference. I would love to have some geese if this theory is true. Oh, I know they would not be able to stand up to fox, or bobcats, but, would be great help with the falcons and hawks if 'it is true.

I had a raccoon reach thru a fence and injure a goose. I'm sure the coon would have killed it if it could have.
On the other hand, I have a very nice murder of ravens that help keep the hawks away. I make sure to leave them treats on the compost pile, so they hang around. I've heard of ravens killing small chickens, but I haven't had an issue with that here - and some of my Araucanas are fairly small. The ravens do like eggs, though. they'd walk right in to the coop & fly out with an egg. I built a roll-out nest box & that solved the problem.

I know a few people that think the white eggs are OK but would never egg brown eggs knowing what else comes out of the bird. My favorite is that blue, green and pink eggs are more nutritious.

When I was a kid and lived on a dairy, a city kid moved into the neighborhood. He insisted on lecturing us on the FACT that only bulls had horns, and refused to change his mind even when confronted with some very convincing evidence. We, in turn, convinced him that the black&white cows gave regular milk, and the brown cows gave chocolate milk.

Im excited to get them and i will post pictures of them as they grow.
Welcome to the thread!

There is someone selling Blue Mille Fleur D'uccle eggs on the The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread. There are probably some restrictions on who can bid so you may need your mom's help if you want them.

We have a murder of crows that have taken up residence in our neighborhood. I've watched them drive away hawks. My girls pay attention when they land in numbers in the trees but go about their business. It is like they are guardian birds! I haven't seen a cooper's hawk in my backyard since the crows moved into the area!

Thank you, Laura! How nice that your eggs are pipping. I am sure it makes coming home to adorable chicks makes it extra special : )

thanks! as of this morning there are 8 that have hatched, one unzipping right now, and two more pipping -- out of a combination of 5 campines, 5 "swedish crosses," and 2 marans, there's only one campine egg that hasn't pipped yet, i don't think. so either 11/12 or 12/12, hooray!

interestingly, three of the marans eggs that were under my broody still have not hatched, and as today is day 24 for them, i might give up on them soon. but the incubator ones are doing great!

edit: and happily, the six baby chicks that i've already transferred to the brooder seem to be settling in fabulously with the week-olds and the three-week-olds -- everyone's all snuggled together without any arguing. quite a relief!

@capayvalleychick Have you ever hatched Del over Dorking mixes? Curious what they look like. Dorking over RIR creates a sex link I wonder if NH over Dorking does... that would be quite helpful!
No, I'm too busy trying to hatch the purebreds!

I know the Del crosses make sex links. Don't know about the Dork crosses.

I didn't know that. Interesting. Lovely photos, as always.

Never knew that about the egg color. I eat them all & so does anyone else that eats my cooking.......whether the know it or NOT.....

Had a lovely visit and super tasty lunch with Karen today. The hubby was happy to finally (after 3+ years) meet my favorite chicken-loving friend/mentor/enabler & get to see her beautiful birds. He said he now understands why I head up there every chance I get - a kindred spirit and great cook who feeds me well

Of course he noted that I also came home with 4 darling Buff Orp chicks & numerous eggs to fill my 2nd incubator! Thank you for feeding us AND my chicken addiction

I thank for the kind words. You are welcomed anytime, with or without Mike......
That is probably true in a all mothers are women (but not all women are mothers ) kind of way. Most hens that lay colored eggs Lay more nutritious eggs because they live in back yards and eat bugs. Most hens who lay white eggs do not.

Now that im lying to you with statistics have this egg!
A good point..........

You must be busy Debi. I missed your posts
A small hawk got one of Aaron's new quail right through the cage. He couldn't pull it out but he killed it. That was right in his backyard in town in Modesto. They have dogs but it didn't deter the hawk.

I know, but I got tired of trying to explain it to her.
I understand!

I have read about phobias like that on the Dumbest things people have said about you chickens...Thread. It is hilarious what people think!
