thanks! it's quite a relief, after my early hatches went so poorly.

and an extra plug for the RCom -- because the interior is all hard plastic, it doesn't smell, and took less than ten minutes to clean up after hatching a dozen chicks -- it's all set again, happily humming away, and the isbar eggs won't have any more interruptions for a while!
I borrowed a big Rcom 50 the first year that I hatched chicks. I loved it but it was too expensive for me to buy one. Now that I've spent money on a Genesis, a cabinet hatcher, and a 1602 Hovabator off of CL, I guess I could have bought an Rcom instead. I think that it was the thought of laying out all that money at one time that kept me from buying one.

given the variability/unpredictability of my work schedule, i didn't see the point in buying something that would need a lot of attention to hatch successfully -- hence the expense has proved to be worth it, in the sense of lack of worry about is the humidity right or has my house gotten too cold for the thing to maintain the right temperature or etc. my RCom only holds 20 eggs, not 50, but I'm pleased that i made the decision that i did -- and added bonus that it's so easy to clean!

I liked how easy it was to use and loved that I could add water from the outside. I also loved the big window for viewing.

Good morning! I woke up at 4 this morning to check on a hatching chick. It is one of my Langshans and true to form was the last to hatch. I have two more Langshan eggs that show no signs of activity. Last night was day 22 so I'll leave them in there another day or so. I set 25 eggs to hatch and 23 hatched so not bad. The breeder who sold me the Langshan trio told me that she hatches the eggs on their sides so I tried that this time. There was a lot of football going on in there but it seems like they hatched better on their sides instead of big end up in cartons which is the way I have done it up to now. The majority of the chicks are Pita Pintas. I love seeing a brooder full of little yellow chicks with black markings! They are so cute!

That's a great hatch!

Thank you!  I couldn't tell - very tired tonight.  So the medicated feed is pre-treated with Corrid.  Big ah ha! moment.

Yeah. But then you are keeping them low on a vitamin permently. Im just not sure on that.

happy to report that the one remaining marans, after a LONG wait, is finally out!  peeping wildly -- will wait til it fluffs up a bit, move over to the brooder (there will now be a total of 22 chicks in there of varying ages, pure mayhem), give the RCom a bit of a rinse inside, and then get the shipped isbar eggs back in quickly, they started on friday & can now finally incubate in peace...

Nice! Huzzah chicks everywhere!

Lual....you will get the hang of it.  I just recently learned how to do the multi quote thing too.  :D

If you are using mobile and byc is not 100% loaded you will be able to read but not multi post. You hit it and it takes you to reply. Happens to me all the time. Otherwise when you hit the multi button you should get a red number on the bottom. If you dont hit it again.

Me too  she is darling...she looks greyish.  Is that just the photo also how in the world is your coop poop free???

@lawatt
so glad you had such  success!

Yes!!! Inquiring minds want to understand poo free!

Woo Hoo! Go Marans! What about the 3 under the broody?

she long ago got up off the remaining eggs, since she has three little chicks that did hatch -- so i'd put them in the incubator, but no sign of any life, and in fact i'm pretty sure all three were clears. so they got taken out last night (end of day 24, when the chicks in the nest hatched early on day 21)

Aww...hopefully they were clears. Do you eggtopsy ones that don't hatch? I usually do just to reassure myself. 24 days is definitley long enough though.

and when i checked in on the brooder this morning, one of the new babies was out from under the EcoGlow, and had gotten weak with the cold -- popped it back underneath, hopefully it wasn't too far gone that it can warm up and recover. silly baby!
Aww...poor thing. I hope ot does OK...

Oh! Forgot I was also going to say @lawatt if they do get too cold I pop them in the incubator. They have to touch the brinsea and that might be hard for a passed out chick. But I bet the ambient temps are high atm with all those bodies there.

Interesting. I have wondered why eggs aren't incubated on their sides. Broody hens don't stand the eggs on end when they are sitting on them.

Speaking of egg position, @ronott1 remember our conversation about storing hatching eggs small end up? I started doing it that way, after you mentioned it, and not turning them. Do you think that has had any effect on hatching - either good or bad?
