California - Northern

Are there any Orpington breeders in NCA? I am going to wait for getting a show chicken and start out with a pet. I love their fluffyness and friendlyness also, saw some chicks at the feed store and out of all the chicks they didn't runaway from side of the cage like all the others breeds. Also I don't think I want to clip wings just yet and all the books I read say they don't fly/don't fly well.
Welcome to BYC!

Yes I do but I have Lemon Cuckoo. But Cuckoos are not recognized by APA. Mine don't fly all that well, nor do they try. They are heavy birds. And chicks in a feed store are nervous from the rough handling they have been through you have to tame them. But yes all my orps are sweet and mellow.. just.. don't mess with the eggs the evil squawk comes out of their mouth! lol They lay all year long and are good egg producers along with meat size. I love them :)

I know a gall that has blues Thistledownfarm. And there is a gal with beautiful Jubilee's but again Jubillies are not APA recognized either.

I wonder if there is a show that would accept the pretty feathered breed of orp?

My current hatch is done as of this morning.. 12 hatched out of 18. One pipped but died before it even started to zip. It was the largest of the BCM eggs. Chick was very large and a bit mushy, but seemed to have absorbed all the yolk. It's head was tucked under the right wing and the egg tooth was barely visible. Another (not a Marans) was not quite as far along and had not absorbed all the yolk when it died. It has not pipped. Ended up with 3 very light colored chicks, 2 bluish and 1 black from unidentified brown eggsand 6 Clean legged BCM. I am using the "Modified heat plate brooder" and I have to say I really like it! I didn't have anyway to make the tapered legs so I am just using 3 stacked plastic cups like they serve drawn butter in at Red Lobster, They are turned upside down and placed at the 2 corners of the highest end. The other end is on the floor. The heating pad is long enough that it hangs over the ends so no draft. The little things seem very comfortable with it and I may switch to it as my primary brooder.
Yay! cool beans.

Mine hatched last night and today have 2 left that have another 48 hours before being duds.

out of 10 that candled good 8 have hatched. I am so glad I got this Genesis and ditched the still air hova

My brooder is in the garage. I put a baby blanket over most of it to help Can you believe it 80's- 70's weather and today snow! The last 18 months have been crazy weather... but I won;t complain about the mild summer that's for sure XD

Some not great pictures but I wanted to show off these muffs. Oh these are the most darling chicks! The muffs are bigger than on my pure AM's! (Shh don't tell!

The black EE's are from our Brabanter and a blue egg laying EE so the eggs will still be blue.

One of the Cockerels (Brabanter)

Typical example of EE

Eggs are the blue or green variety

Brabanter x EE Can you say jowls?

Hoping for a crest too!

Don't know where the redhead came from, probably one of the really red EE's and the Blue Wheaten.

The Brabanter and Wheaten offspring.

Did I mention jowls?

A top shot of one of the wild types (I think this was an old egg from under the GLW)

Busy day around here but I snuck out to the broody box for a few quick photos anyway.

I don't really care if the chicken is accepted into shows, I do want a show chicken at some point though. The ones at the feed store weren't scared, but it is a real nice place. But I thought it might be better to get a chick/pullet from a breeder so they're not terrified of me + getting one at an age I know it is a pullet also choice in color. We can't keep roos where I live I'd hate to rehome my baby if it turned into a roo, though I do know I nice place.

Though I more want a meat size to keep our cat + dogs not to think of it as dinner. I've seen small dogs(not mine) pin down a Leghorn hen before. If the chicken is almost as big as them they'll think twice. Though they shouldn't be to bad because they don't think of my lizard at food. I just have to train them to know it is family, my dogs love our cat but chase feral cats out at our horses.

Very Cute!

Of course I want some of them now!

I do not recommend Bobwhites!  They are cute and I love their call but they are crazy, not good layers, and monogamous.  (I'm a big proponent of monogamy but not in domesticated birds that you want eggs from.)  I received "free" Bobwhite quail eggs with my new incubator last year and hatched out 19 of the cute little buggers.  Dh was so kind to build me a double decker 3 x 8 ft. quail pen that still wasn't big enough for the amount of quail we had. 7 died of cocci before I realized what was going on and I ended up with only 3 females so 3 pairs.  They hatched last April and I have yet to get an egg from them.  I listed them on craigslist and sold 2 pairs this past weekend.  The third pair literally flew the coop and went over the fence into the neighbor's yard.  Goodbye quail!  You should have seen us trying to catch them.  My DH even climbed up into the pen with a net to catch the rest of them.  He couldn't believe how strong they are for such small birds.  He said that he would rather catch chickens any day!  They also shed copious amounts of feathers when they are stressed.  We had to transfer the two pairs from a cage to a box for the buyer and our entryway looked like a feather pillow had exploded in it.  I am left with 6 boys and I have one person interested but he keeps wanting my address to come over after dark and pick them up.  Um...no, I don't think so.  We thought about processing them but they are not very big and it just seemed like more work than it was worth.  Quail are cute but I'm not planning on raising them again.  I'll just stick with chickens, at least for now.  The good thing is I will be able to use the $400 quail pen for outdoor brooder pens!

Sorry Debi, but the picture you just painted cracked me up! Reminded me of my neighbors....one of them decided to hatch quail...he had 25 in his garage! Anyway, one apparently got out and fled to the shrubs under the front window of our other neighbor. I pulled into my driveway, home from work, to see about 5 behinds! They were all bent over the bushes trying to catch the poor little thing! The neighbor inside the house was plastered to the window pointing down at the location of the little escapee! It was pretty funny! They are fast!

I replied via my cell phone but I don't know if it got to you... I am happy you have MANY! Any chance of getting a list? lol...

Thank you!

I'll sort through my pens and see what can go and post a list. My first project is to get my taxes done and filed, running out of time on that one but I only got back on Sunday.

Processing quail is the easiest thing ever. I can do four in about 15 minutes. As opposed to chickens which takes me about two hours for three (I'm OCD about pin feathers). But I skin quail

This is the demo I followed.
