Quote: For heat lamp bulbs, I have been using " red landscape / spot light bulbs" that are 100 watt. Works pretty good. You can find them at homedepot
Good idea! I will have to look for those. I thought they would be higher wattage so haven't even looked for them. FYI for anyone using higher thatn about a 60 watt...make sure you use a ceramic base on your brooder cover. 75 W and up can melt the plastic ones.

Some not great pictures but I wanted to show off these muffs. Oh these are the most darling chicks! The muffs are bigger than on my pure AM's! (Shh don't tell!

The black EE's are from our Brabanter and a blue egg laying EE so the eggs will still be blue.

One of the Cockerels (Brabanter)

Typical example of EE

Eggs are the blue or green variety

Brabanter x EE Can you say jowls?

Hoping for a crest too!

Don't know where the redhead came from, probably one of the really red EE's and the Blue Wheaten.

The Brabanter and Wheaten offspring.

Did I mention jowls?

A top shot of one of the wild types (I think this was an old egg from under the GLW)

Busy day around here but I snuck out to the broody box for a few quick photos anyway.

They are adorable!!!!!

Hi guys. Lots of hatching excitement going on. congratulations to all! Remember my excitement over bringing home the broody silkie and her clutch? well that doesn't look like it is going to happen. My contact has fallen off the face of the earth. No word for over a week and those eggs were due to hatch

oh well...sigh. Sent her a fb message telling her I assumed the whole thing was off and to contact me if she still wanted the girl to come to me but that I was moving on. I hope she and her brood have gone to a nice home.

I think bantam Co Chins may be the way for me to go anyway.

I am in NJ visiting my girls. They are off at MMA class and I have been here with the dog...It has been so nice just kicking back drinking tea and catching up.

Deb welcome home. keep us posted on what breeds you are downsizing

I am in the acquisition camp at the moment as well. Though between processing and selling I am down 7 birds in 2014. take away the two broodies and the non-layer and I have a paltry 14 hens/pullets. Of course the broodies are sitting on 18 eggs between them and I will be keeping at least two from each hatch but they don't count yet.

Aww...man! I know how much you were looking forward to getting that silky. Why can;t people just follow thru. Even if she changed her mind or already placed them she could have at least let you know!

Yea its cold and supposed to get cold again tonight for SF bay area possible snow on the hills according to one weather report. However supposed to warm up significantly after that.

Im going to try and get pics up again tonight to see if I can get help sexing my Delawares. They are all beginning to look the same again so I think its just an age thing with these 4 One is probably just a bit older.

I have questions about leg color. The chicks had orange legs but they are starting to yellow on 3 of the Delawares. Is this an indication of anything? The only threads Ive read indicate that the leg color changes over time and possibly when laying.

If its a maturity thing that would also explain some of the differences in development also Im suspecting differing bloodlines may also have something to do with this.

My 2 little buffs could not be more different from one another so Im wondering if this is a sex thing or simply a bloodline or personality thing

1 is a little more yellow and obviously at least a half day younger. She has been dubbed Goldie
The other older one is darker and dubbed Brownie. (dont blame me for the names)

Brownie was the panter back on day one and if left in the box alone is a cry baby but easiest to pick up.
Goldie while friendly is the most quiet and will only cry out if left alone too long.

Both do this crazy thing where they try to nestle under one another and it looks really funny like the hand pile game in reverse almost. (My Delawares never did this)

Goldie however will occasionally peck Brownie on the top of the head and Brownie will squat down and look like she was just spanked for misbehavior. Its almost comical.

They will pretty much ignore us looking at them or reaching into the box unless we touch the food or water then they are right there like puppies.
