California - Northern

They should be able to go outside at 6 weeks old. The weather is supposed to warm up again too.

They are so cute when they get to go outside!
Yeah they spent the afternoon outside on Sunday. I think one of them caught a flying bug that was hanging out in the cage.

Good news!

A breeding pen is gong to be set up for the Pita Pintas in Winters!

Very exciting!
Whoo hoo!!! And congrats on the educator badge!!!

I think that my Pita Pintas are going to end up at the farm. That makes me sad. I love this boy but he has started crowing more often and the days are getting longer which means more crowing. We are processing extra birds this Sat and the next Sat rearranging all the pens. I am thinking that it is going to be out with the Bresse and in with the Pita Pintas.

Quote: lol you can teach them to accept a chicken but I would not even leave a dog alone with a chicken. You never know. My dog had a friend Barred rock hen. She wasn't well so she stayed with him 10 days later he just decided he was hungry.................... and he never touched another chicken and she was better by then. But if you get a rooster from the feed store you can eat it before it starts crowing or give it away and try again.

Congratulations! You are always so generous with your knowledge. We thank you and are so glad you got noticed!

Question regarding orchard sprays and chickens. We have a friend whose best (almost only) spot for her coop and run is rather close to an orchard. Probably 50 feet from the nearest tree. It's almonds so a fungicide will be sprayed yearly, maybe 2x per year? Also harvest is dusty.

Any thoughts? Is this too dangerous to keep healthy chickens?

It would depend on when they were sprayed and what exactly is sprayed.

I doubt they will be sprayed by plane. will it be a tractor pulled sprayer or a hand held one on a back pack.

If the fungicide is dangerous she could make a temporary pen using fencing(something predator proof too) in the front yard or a place away from the spray drift for a day.

Almond dust will not hurt them during harvest.
