Feed store is closer but I am over run with chicks - according to BYCUgh... The bad chick morning got worse. When I bought these eggs (they are mixes from a lady in Carmichael), I bought a dozen. I gave 6 to my mom for her broodie, and I put the other 6 in the 'bator. This was her first time hatching, and I kinda' talked her into it. My mom called this morning, super excited, because she could hear peeping. She called a couple hour later and told me they all were dead. I guess one of the other hen got into the nesting box, and between the two hen the babies must have gotten smothered. I felt so awful. She took the chicks in the house and tried to help them, but it was too late.![]()
I had another one after the first hatch, but the other died (probably some time last night/ today. They all had lots of yellow liquid in the egg. One had pipped, and the other 3 did not. I'm thinking it must be a problem with my incubator, because the chicks with the broodie weren't sticky at all. I kept the humidity between 20%-30% and it was at 65% during lock down. One of the chicks I egg-topsied was seriously deformed. I was missing everything (on it's head) from the bottom of it's beak up. I've never seen anything like it. I'm surprised it survived as long as it did (in the egg). It was moving around last night.
I think I need to console myself with a quick trip to the feed store.Or does anyone close have new chicks. I have a big ol' brooder set up, and only 2 chicks to put in it.![]()
What are the signs? Inquiring minds must know all!All this chick drama! Dang! Sorry everyone who has had a bad chick day! I had to end up helping my lone SLW chick hatch today. It was not positioned right and couldn't turn to zip. Now I am going to have to find a couple of chicks for him. Yes, I think it is a rooster. I have hatched enough Wyandottes to see the signs!![]()
