I have more chicks hatching but it was not a good BYC day for me.

It is so nice to be back on this thread!
Sorry to hear you had a bad day. You will feel better now that you are back on this thread

Or " will you have hens in your next litter!" :gig
I just can't make this stuff up!

Can I have hen eggs? I don't want rooster eggs. But I can't complain. The guy who came today was an engine who was offering tips on my digital dramas. I told him how to hatch Marans he told me what to do next time I want to spend a few thousand dollars on incubator parts.

We love you never leave us!
I will post a pick of Clovis son for you. I vote you name him childebert! That is a son of clovis the first king France and the start of the Merovingian line.
Breese = Merovingians
Marans= Carolingians and Capetians
cream legbars = movie stars
Seramas = snacks
Silkies= clueless...

oh no Ron what happened

Resting shipped eggs in the incubator with the big end up for 2 to 5 days with the turner off and then turn it on has been dropped per a thread on BYC. I still think it helps or at least is seems to give the poor shipped chick a better chance of hatching. Someone took it personally. I try to be as diplomatic as possible but it did not work this time.

A typo in a PM even made the person mad.

Oh well.

Ugh... The bad chick morning got worse. When I bought these eggs (they are mixes from a lady in Carmichael), I bought a dozen. I gave 6 to my mom for her broodie, and I put the other 6 in the 'bator. This was her first time hatching, and I kinda' talked her into it. My mom called this morning, super excited, because she could hear peeping. She called a couple hour later and told me they all were dead. I guess one of the other hen got into the nesting box, and between the two hen the babies must have gotten smothered. I felt so awful. She took the chicks in the house and tried to help them, but it was too late.

I had another one after the first hatch, but the other died (probably some time last night/ today. They all had lots of yellow liquid in the egg. One had pipped, and the other 3 did not. I'm thinking it must be a problem with my incubator, because the chicks with the broodie weren't sticky at all. I kept the humidity between 20%-30% and it was at 65% during lock down. One of the chicks I egg-topsied was seriously deformed. I was missing everything (on it's head) from the bottom of it's beak up. I've never seen anything like it. I'm surprised it survived as long as it did (in the egg). It was moving around last night.

I think I need to console myself with a quick trip to the feed store.

Or does anyone close have new chicks. I have a big ol' brooder set up, and only 2 chicks to put in it.
Feed store is closer but I am over run with chicks - according to BYC :) It is so sad when a hatch goes that way.

I had a bunch die in the shell when my bator was off temp-wise. About 10 pipped and died. It was horrid. I helped 5. Four of them were doing great and then the waterer fell over on them and killed 5 in one fell (bad pun) swoop.

It was pretty bad. But now. Now we had a great hatch and all the little fuzz butts are sooo fun!

All this chick drama! Dang! Sorry everyone who has had a bad chick day! I had to end up helping my lone SLW chick hatch today. It was not positioned right and couldn't turn to zip. Now I am going to have to find a couple of chicks for him. Yes, I think it is a rooster. I have hatched enough Wyandottes to see the signs!

What are the signs? Inquiring minds must know all!

on that note, here's a tidbit of cuteness from this afternoon:

first time outside with mama!
ADORABLE

We have a Brahma who persisted in being broody all week even though I was stealing her eggs. She warmed that empty box for 4 days straight. Rewarded her today with 6 eggs. She chuckled, fluffed and settled over them.

I want to see a broody momma raise her chicks!
