Here's pictures that show the size difference in the combs, the one on the left side of the picture is quickly getting a larger comb than the one on the right side. The one on the right is the one we're hoping is a girl! Although I think that at this age it's probably too soon to tell for sure, so I'm just torturing myself by trying to figure it out. They grow so fast, I'm sure we'll know in no time if we have a girl or not!

With Marans at that age, They are 2 or 3 weeks old? It is really hard to tell. The one on the left is leaning towards being a cockerel. I might have spotted a very small wattle starting too. I do not see a wattle on the one on the right.

The differences will be obvious in three weeks or so.

I'm not sure how old they are, I can only guess. 2 or 3 weeks sounds about right. I agree that the one on the left seems to be a boy, he stands taller in pictures than the other one does.

You're right about it looking like he has small wattles coming in already. I've been calling him a he, and we already have a home for him if he does end up being a he. My mom's work friend has Black Copper Marans, which is what these two are, so she or her friend will take him.

I have a broody serama hatching 6 eggs. Is it okay to leave them with her without a heat lamp? Or should I separate her and use a lamp?

Broodies do not need heat lamps.

A fellow in Montanna had a broody hatch chicks in December and Momma hen kept them all warm.

Here are my Marans at.... oh gosh, I forget exactly how old they were, but they were around the same age.

The left one ended up being a cockerel and the right a pullet.

Nice eye candy, but that's about it. No, wait, they do lay huge eggs that make great meals! :D

I hope I don't offend any one but...
peacock is very tasty to eat as well, like a gigantic pheasant. We have had the breast meat bbq'd after marinating in a tequila-lime concoction. Just gotta cook it for a shorter time since it's more like wild game with a lot less fat than store-bought critters.

Thank you for the information on Peacock meat!

Emu's and Ostrich are good for meat too?
