I had ostrich at a fancy SF restaurant and it was very tasty, sort of like filet mignon.

I remember the Ostrich and Emu fad about 10 years ago. The thought was to make money selling the meat. It wound up being too hard and or expensive for most people.

I watched a Dirty Jobs episode where they were wrangling Ostriches. It was very funny!

Quote: Sounds tasty, but the amount of time and effort I put into raising them it just doesn't make sense for me to eat them. If someone wants to buy one from me and eat it, that's fine, but most people around here aren't willing to to pay that much for 4-8 pound bird when they can get a big muscovy drake from me instead.

Just some prior tolbunt hatches to whet your appetite, LOL

lol love this picture !
Oh My Gosh. So cute!!!

Does anyone with Legbars know if they pass on the "auto sexing" if they are crossed with something else? On of the chicks is a Cream legbar (mom), with either Ameraucana, LC Orp, or FBCM (Dad). I'm guessing not the Am or the FBCM, because the chick doesn't have feathered legs, or puffy cheeks. I'm wondering if I can tell what sex it is yet.
try with a welsummer hen or with a crele. I would assume a black or blue bird would to as with my penedesenca I had a blue ameraucana in there and it seemed to me I hatched some with larger dots both blue and black chicks ask @nicalandia
he would know for sure
Good morning! This has been an awesome chicken weekend so far.

Yesterday, we processed all the extra roos running around our friends' farm. I'm not sure what the final count was because there were other people there processing some of their own chickens. I also sold 4 Bresse laying pullets to Ron's chicken farmer friend, Jeremy. We enjoyed a great talk about chickens, hogs, goats, cows, sheep, etc. It was nice to meet a young man so committed to farming. George wants to buy a sheep or two from him for meat. So, we narrowed our Bresse flock down to 2 cockerels and 8 hens. The Bresse boys get one more chance to show that they can be respectful. We processed one cockerel who flogged me from behind and then wouldn't give up. That earned him top spot on death row. He attacked George when he went into the pen to get him. He was even more nasty than his father. The 2 boys that we kept are big and beautiful plus showed no signs of aggression even when I picked up their girls.

In addition to the Bresse and misc mixed breed cockerels, we processed our first Pita Pinta. He was 31 weeks old and weighed 4.4 lb processed. We should have processed all these boys several weeks ago but with the rain, etc we put it off. I was pleased with their weight, though. Almost all of them were between 4 and 5 lb and we had a couple of them that were around 5.5 lb.

Today, we are headed to Placerville and meeting two thread members to hand off chicks. Then we are spending the day with our friends. They have a hydroponics set up that George is interested in. On the way home, we will be picking up some black Langshans from a BYCer in that area and dropping them off at the farm. Hmmm....is there anything else chicken that I can fit into the day?!!
have a nice trip

I saw that episode! It was very funny! Many of his shows crack me up...with the exception of the brick sewer system in SF! Interesting history wise, but yucky topic.

Emu's and Ostrich are good for meat too?

When I was a 4H resource leader, one month the emu leader brought meat prepared in about four different ways. It was quite tasty and you would not have known it wasn't beef, maybe a bit leaner.

Omg soooo cute. Do u sell? i want some

I know, this picture to me was the "OMG, is it dead?" I hate when chicks sleep so soundly, they always give me a startle.

I don't really even mean pink. Just the slight melon color to the comb. See the color just above the nostril? The light beige? In my experience the whole comb is that color with a pullet.

But hopefully I'm wrong.

This teaches us all..........You be sure to let us all know how it turns out Ardi.

I hope I don't offend any one but...
peacock is very tasty to eat as well, like a gigantic pheasant. We have had the breast meat bbq'd after marinating in a tequila-lime concoction. Just gotta cook it for a shorter time since it's more like wild game with a lot less fat than store-bought critters.

Haven't tried peacock but like many others have had Emu & Ostrich & like that. Pheasant...not as much.

Sounds like a great day. Wish I was there. I can always use the practice. What do your friends grow Hydroponically? We had a guy come & do a program at the garden club once.
