OK, now it's my turn to ask for advice about a potential health problem. (Knew things have been too good lately.

)

My son noticed today that Monkey, our favorite EE, has a shrunken and pale comb. I came inside to research possible causes and when I went back out 2 hours later for a more thorough health check, her color had improved, but the comb is still smallish.

She is about 5 and a half months old and has been laying for a few weeks, but no egg today, although she sat in the nest box for several hours. Some one laid an egg with no shell from the perch this morning, could have been her or one other possible pullet.

My health check did not reveal any other problems except for a bit of dried white "waste" on feathers below the vent. Her crop was quite full and was a bit softer than the other girls, but not really squishy. Inside her mouth looked good, no odor. She seems normal in all other respects. She is not currently molting. No info about her poop.

Going to get some vitamins and probiotics tomorrow. Maybe Corid to have on hand. Anything else?

Does any one know what might be causing the pale, shrunken comb?

Hi Lynda,

Something that harms blood flow or red blood cells like parasites. Is the vent normal looking? The stuff on the vent can come from round worms or mites.

Check with UCD and see if you can send them a manure sample. I posted contact information this morning.

The vitamins and probiotics is a good place to start.

Thanks for replying Ron. The vent looked normal to me, but not an expert here, if you know what I mean.

No redness or signs of mites or lice around vent or under wings. The bit of white stuff is below the vent on the feathers, not on the skin.

Worms are possible.

I have injectable ivermectin left over from treating rabbit ear mites. Was considering trying to worm her, or should I do everyone? Are worms common in summer? It seems so dry. Does Davis charge much for a worm check? (I now have a dopey dog with something in his ear that will probably require a vet, so that blows my budget.)

I was researching egg bound (since she didn't lay but spent a long time in the nest box) and crop problems. Could those cause a pale comb?

Hoping we wake up tomorrow and find her all better!

Kim thought the cost was eight dollars for a float test from UCD. If you find my earlier post for poor Lucy, there is an account number you can use to get 70% off on Fedex shipping. Never use USPS for UCD. We(I work for the English Dept.) only get mail delivery on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It also takes a day because mail goes to the mail division and then out to the Departments. If you ship tomorrow, USPS might get it there on Wednesday but more likely on Friday.

Egg bound could do that. Their combs go pale when the lay an egg. Give her a bath(just warm water)! They love it when you do that. Set her in warm water and see if she lays an egg. If there is one stuck, you can sometimes feel it. You can also put some olive oil in the vent. I did that one time with a sick chicken. My youngest said I was molesting the chicken....

It tuned out to be mites. The vent was red, swollen and inflamed. I treated with Ivomec( generic) sprayed the coop with poultry protector and put up Die Mite Strips(from McMurray Hatchery). She started laying again the next week, her tail feathers grew back in and all was well.

Hi Tina! Welcome to the thread. 5+ acres sounds great. No neighbors to worry about! What breeds do you have? There are some serious breeders in the area working on some newer (to the US) breeds that are heat tolerant. I'm sure they'd love to chat with you!

Hi, This 100+ heat wave we are having this week is killing me. I am so done with this heat. my chickens are not all laying. i have 20+ hens and only getting 12-15 eggs a day. we live in a retirement town and I have people who love my eggs. Luckly they understand the heat. But still I would love chickens that are heat tolerant and cold to. right now I have laying on farm chickens, i have just started this looking into breeds that lay through cold and HOTTT days. so i can keep up with demand. if you know any breeders in my area love to chat to. thanks Lynda
