California - Northern

How sad, sorry! I lost three chicks in a shipment when the PO lost them for a day.

That's my system (and I have 5 acres of burial places). Chicks are wrapped in a papertowel, the few large birds I've lost are bagged in a plastic bag.

Deb

thanks -- i opted for the same, as the ground's too hard this time of year to bury them very deeply, & i'm sure a raccoon would just dig them back up anyway.

SO appreciate all the help from all of you! i'm so new to all this, today felt a bit overwhelming at times!

great, i'll do that... so appreciate all the advice!! i just checked on her, and she's still drinking, at the very least -- and her stool seems to have more dark/firm bits, although still greenish, but at least yellow and watery than yesterday.

and just to remind myself not to be too blue: here are the new sussex girls, still thinking about names -- they're going to be gorgeous!

,

So sad about your Isbar chicks. The heat has sure been a test for flocks all across the US, so many losses.

The Sussex are pretty. I like the Columbian pattern. Tried to get a Delaware (same coloring) but she turn into a Leghorn. (I,I,I... I say!)

Best wishes for Lucy's recovery. Isn't this thread the best? So many people sharing and trying to help (well, really actually helping!!) I feel fortunate to be part of it; I've learned so much and am more relaxed knowing that this awesome support system is close by. Three cheers for California - Northern!

PS I love the smileys! It was the tipping factor in my joining BYC after months of lurking! This is my only social media experience. Crawling into the 21st century!

where I live I throw them up on the hill and foxes coyotes or bobcats take em away.

Well, so far one chick from the Polish and one from the EE broodies. Couldn't get a look at the EE's, man that mom is wicked when it comes to her eggs! But the little Polish is still damp, I saw it was hatching a couple of hours ago and mom let me lift her wing to check out the chick. So cute!!!

Seeing brand new chicks just never gets old! Can't wait to see how many hatch by morning!

well, it's 3am -- woke up from Lucy making some distressed-sounding calls from her brooder-box in the bathroom, went in to find her with labored gaspy breathing and it looked like her leg wasn't working again, and her heady was very droopy -- and a few minutes later she had a seizure of sorts and died. no sign of any bloody stool, and she'd eaten some of the yogurt i'd put in with her -- and i'd given her some Corid in her water last night, although not sure how much she drank. very sad, she was unquestionably my favorite chicken of the six.

and now i'm wide awake at 3am with a dead chicken on my hands, and two cats going completely bonkers from the ruckus.

here's a couple of polaroids from sunday afternoon, before she started going quiet:

AmyBeth, I'm not sure about the lavender.

Pam, hope you wake to lots of chicks this morning!

Laura, that's so sad. I'm so sorry about Lucy. Her photos are lovely.

I know it is hard, but the best thing is to send her in for a Necropsy. I have done this twice now and it make me feel like I am being very responsible.

You can send dead birds here for necropsy testing. I hope you don't need it, but Debi/PetRock suggested this addition and it's a good one. Thanks Debi and Ron, for the link.

UC DAVIS FEDEX INFO: Their account # is 364343981. If you use their account number you will get to use UC Davis's discount which is up to 70% off. They said that they will bill you for the shipment after you get the report (or at the same time.) Also, FedEx and UPS both ship to the actual lab every day... the Postal Service doesn't.
