California - Northern

Congratulations to This thread! We are in the top ten for the last 1 day, 7 days and 30 days! The next level will be all time posts!

When is the meet up in Redding? It is time for a Chciken Stock up there! I bet Nifty Chcicken would give some great prizes too.

Also I am looking forward to the show in Anderson!

Ron you should check out the Penedesenca thread. hardly any action but Elias crossed a Crele Penedesenca with a white Emp.
offspring are pretty nice. he is going to breed them back to the white emp

Does anyone have any Penedesenca chicks for sale? I'll check out the thread too but would love to buy some day olds and give them to my broody that hasn't had anything but stinky eggs! Pene's are dark egg layers right?

ok, here are the official baby portraits, at 2 days old:

the cream legbar girl

the two basques

and one blue (left) and two lavender orpingtons

it will be such a treat to watch them all grow! (these are the first baby chicks i've ever had, so rather bowled over by the cuteness)

yes Pene's lay a very dark brown egg. Early in the season are about as dark as any.
If you find someone with them please let me know though.
I have young Crele's but they are still aways out from laying.

NapaValley Chickens does Partridge I think but not sure on the quality and they are very spendy. I think $15.00 each
I may put some wheaten's in the incubator again soon but have not had alot of luck with them hatching. Maybe in a few weeks I will try some more

So lovely! Thanks everyone for sharing pics. No babies for me for a while, so I have to get my chick fix vicariously. It's easy to understand why incubator addiction is so rampant!

Awe, aren't they sweet! Is there anything cuter then a baby chick?

Quote: That's what I read, that they're very dark. I was searching all the dark egg layers and liked what I read about the Pene's! Now I'm on a mission....I need to find some so the broodies can raise them. SunnyDawn got some recently and I think it was in CA. She's having internet access problems so she's not on much but I have a message into her so I can see if they have any chicks right now.

if she has some please share... after you get yours of course..
I love the Crele most ( my avatar) just so handsome.
Crele eggs seem to be more Dark Wet Terra Cotta than the others I have seen.

haha lol. I was wondering because a blue egg x brown egg layer = olive egger. So what must a pink layer + blue layer = x? Pink and blue make lavender on the color wheel...but I am completely ignorant when it comes to the science of breeding.

Your thinking about olive eggers genetics the wrong way. Marans actually spray paint a pigment over a fairly light egg. You aren't combining shell color. You are trying to get the blue shell gene and the spray paint gene together. I don't know if you can combine shell corlor. But there are other types of olive eggeds too so maybe you can......
Still trying to catch up on thread welcome new people!

so here's yet ANOTHER question for you more-experienced-with-chickens people (thank you in advance!):

i've got two 6-ish week old light sussex girls that have been pipping around in an exclosure pen within the larger run that holds the five 12-ish week olds, so everyone can see each other but not reach each other -- and today i am experimenting with integration: i propped the bottom of the x-pen up on a brick, so that along two sides, the little girls can limbo underneath it but the big girls can't.

so far, the sussexes are LOVING exploring the larger run -- and they HAVE gone in & out of their x-pen several times -- but i've noticed that in the panic of being chased by a larger bird, they tend to forget HOW to get back into their x-pen.

any suggestions, or should i just not worry about it? there's been plenty of chasing and pecking, as expected, but i'm keeping an eye on everyone to make sure no one gets hurt...

these are the sussex girls, incidentally -- probably about half the size of the 12-week olds:

thanks for any thoughts/suggestions!
