NOOOOOOOOO! just found out that the closest feed store to me (1 hr away) is closing, They are only keeping the tractor sales open as the feed store is a consistant loss! The next closest is another 30 min away. Getting to costco/walmart/trader joes already is a 6 hour min trip. Oh, the things we do to live in the places that we love.
how far is Placerville? I can make it to Meyers in a hour
there is a Tractor Supply and , a few feed stores

Oh no! I do drive down the hill to Chico for most of my feed needs and that is about 25 minutes from my house, but we do have one in Paradise if I really need something quicker. They are as much as $10 more a bag on some things. I went in today for Game starter for the quail and they only had 50# bags. I passed on it. Figured I would go ahead and get another bag of organic chick starter anyway. They were out and said they have to order at least 1500 lbs of stuff from Purina and it might be a couple of weeks. A couple of weeks???? MIne birds can't wait a couple of weeks to eat! soooo.....I will be driving to Chico again.

And you notice the dang incubator on the right was full too? That room was like walking into a hot box. Watch out for the dreaded "chick dust" in your house,

I love it! And you are right about the chick dust! We have a 1 yr old. This last January I put a stop to all non-essential chicks in the house. Sick ones may come in - that's it. I can just see her pulling the rubbermaids over. We have a 10 x 12 playhouse the owners built 50 years ago for their kids. It's a small version of a house with narrow, short doors but much larger than the store bought ones. It has electricity so we are using it as a broody house. I'm still incubating inside. I can't figure out a good alternative as our garage is not insulated and separated from the house by a very long ways.

Did I mention that I set 58 eggs tonight? This is a first time set for 3 varieties. The Swedish Flower Hens, EO Basque and Cream Legbars. I'm kind of excited!

I am tempted to flip my drive in that direction, but it would have to have the Costco / walmart/ trader joes.... I hit that once a month . altogether it's a day trip . It takes SOOOO long but there is only Safeway and raleys here in town and with 7 people, 2 dogs , 2 cats , some ;-) birds - that won't cut it!

So my BCMs are 4 weeks tomorrow; anyone want to play the pullet or cockerel game?

#1 - 95% sure Cockerel

#2 - Unsure

#3 - Thinking cockerel

And #4 - Really hoping pullet...

But feel free to crush said hopes and give me reason to find more chicks...I mean I need at least 1 dark egg layer right?!

What a delightful story Rebecca. Chickens aren't the smartest animals on the farm sometimes.....LOL
How do you ferment your feed? I have been watching You Tube a lot lately and came across that. Does it cut down the waste? My chickens waste sooooooooo much. I have been day dreaming of making a restrictor ring for my big hanging feeders. I switched to pellets some time back trying to cut down waste from the crumbles I was feeding before.
Fermented feed has almost zero waste!
