California - Northern

Glad that you like the area!

My family has a place on the north shore, near Kings Beach. I tried to grow a garden there once. I usually spend most of my time there shoveling snow, but since there wasn't much last year, went skiing for the first time. I can imagine our neighbor having a fit if he saw a chicken.

So my BCMs are 4 weeks tomorrow; anyone want to play the pullet or cockerel game? #1 - 95% sure Cockerel #2 - Unsure #3 - Thinking cockerel And #4 - Really hoping pullet... But feel free to crush said hopes and give me reason to find more chicks...I mean I need at least 1 dark egg layer right?!
I am the crusher oh hope so I wont say anything.
Can anyone confirm something I was told about Mereks (sp?) vaccination? That once a bird has been vaccinated that it becomes a carrier and will infect any flock that has not been vaccinated?
No. Most chicks are vaccinated with turkey maraks anyway not active maraks. But read the thread its info every chicken owner should know.
You need to get some golden cuckoo Marans chicks. They can be color sexed at hatch so you know you are getting pullets for sure ;)
Normally I would scoff at such things as a fBcm snob. But your eggs are an acceptable color.

Well I have survived 17 years . Not quite sure how , it's all a blur of summer/ winter/ and raising a family ;-)
I wonder if anywhere else would content me after what I see around me here from sun up to sun down.

He's one I found last summer and bottle fed. Meant to turn him over to a wildlife rescue, but kept putting it off and now he's too big and tame. By tame I mean he won't bite people unless startled, he's no lap opossum, that's for sure.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone bottle feeding an opossum. Very interesting story, thanks for sharing.
Lol, I guess most poultry people kill them.

They sure are pretty! (don't suppose you have any 4wk pullets that need a home?

)

I think they are all boys.

Here is a great Mareks reference for you:

Thanx for the link; I'll do some more reading.

I dont vaccinate but its a different strain I believe which will not harm unvaccinated birds
Thank you!

The whole bio-security thing kinda freaks me out; I know that I'm going to have to deal with sick birds at some point but I guess I'm going to be overly paranoid until it happens. And there's so much (mis)information out there...

Quote: That is good to know! I did find a gallon ziplock I had for the ducklings. It should hold me over until I can get to Chico..

Quote: I was goin to say "Wow...that's a lot of eggs" Then I remembered I still have 36 coming next week and have 12 to set this morning. I am also expecting some very dark Marans eggs as soon as fertility tests are done.

#1 - 95% sure Cockerel

#2 - Unsure

#3 - Thinking cockerel

And #4 - Really hoping pullet...

They all look like boys to me. If any is a pullet it might be #2, but I think even that one is a cockerel. What are their tail feathers like? If they are all pretty subby like #3, I'd be willing to put money on all being boys...

The Dels arrived at the feed store Wed Feb 26th so that makes them 10 weeks (if you can say pullet or not it would be helpful)

Buffs Arrived feed store Fri 3/28 making them 6 weeks this week

Here is the brooder still needs some final touches but all the Buffs seem to get along in it.
Bump
It seems every time I post picks a flurry of activity sweeps my stuff pages back.

I have a couple of laying pullets I would be willing to part with. They are about a year old. Not super dark eggs but at the beginning of the cycle they were laying about a 5 on the color chart. I have one pullet that is avout3 months od that I hatched from eggs from Chickengirl but she is not at POL so not sure how dark her eggs will be. I rehomed the cockerels I got from that clutch. I am also waiting for some very dark eggs from Tennesee as soon as the breeder determines fertility. If I have extras from them I would be willing to share. PM me if you are interested in the layer. I could bring one or both down to chick maybe as soon as tomorrow.
