3 days without my new Tolbunt Polish hen laying an egg for me. She didn't lay the first day I got her, then she laid two days in a row, now 3 days without laying. I just need 4 eggs so I can drive them to Chico to have someone hatch them for me! C'mon girl...you have 4 days to lay two more eggs. Get on it!

Some say red pepper flakes will get them laying again.

Just a teaspoon a day should be fine.

Hello Everybody!! Been super busy lately working on the new coop and I could use some imput. For those of you in the Sac valley area (hot and dry): what do you use on the floors of your coops? And do you use "drop boards"? I keep going back and forth between deep-litter pine shavings or sand. It' a walk-in coop with dirt floor; our soil is pretty sandy. I've read quite a bit about both but would like some practical hand-ons info from our area. Thanx as always!
Here's our progress so far!
First, the front of the coop, the big end, should be facing north because of our weather patterns. The front can be open mostly too. We need a lot of ventilation here which most coop plans do not account for.

Since the coop is on the ground, I would use sand or gravel. The gravel can be raked like a cat box. You might consider a poop board under the roosts since most of the manure will be there as they poop and night. short flat trays can be put on the poop board to collect the poo and then it can go into a compost pile.

You have a great coop so far!

I wish I could get her to eat them, but she won't eat anything except the food in the feeder. And even then, I have to physically pick her up and put her in the coop several times a day so that she'll eat and drink. Crazy bird. She still spends almost all her time hiding out away from the other hens.

Put the red pepper flakes into the feeder. She should eat them then.

That is great!

I brought Marans for Lucas but he could not take them because he already had too many chickens. Grand Pa was very strict with him. The Marans went to Chiquita later.

This is me with Seiji my Basque Hen Cockerel.

Now I gotcha.......LOL I definitely remember you, just had the wrong name attached to the wrong guy.......LOL. I didn't even know you had brought Marans I don't think. That was my first Chicken Party & I was certainly a little "dingy" trying to keep track of everything. This one was much more organized. I had one under my belt & had soooooooooooo much quality help. I honestly can say I think I saw each person & maybe even know each name & face except for all the kids. Some I know their names & some I don't....................LOL There were a lot more people too but I had the advantage of having met 1/2 of them between parties so I didn't have as many new meets.

It was a great party and I still have memories of the beautiful chickens you had then. I saw a Broody Silkie that was hording eggs like Dragons hoard gold! There was also the pen with the fancy chickens in it. They were very exotic.

I hope I can make the next one.

I keep it mixed in a spray bottle. I put the eggs in the incubator trays, give them a spray and put them wet into the incubator, no touching involved. And I really only do this with eggs I've had to wash crud off. I only do that if I REALLY want to try to hatch an egg and it's dirty. Normally I only set naturally clean eggs.

Next one you say????? You and several others & I am already considering it & mentioning the possibility to my family...........they did all my work for me. They seem receptive to the idea. I think they enjoyed all the activity amongst us chicken lovers & all the kids were such a hoot.!!!!!!

How hot is germany?
Karen if you can I would vacc your beibs fpr maraks. They are fragile to us versions of diseases and seem to die a lot.

That was a very funny moment! I was not gonna rat you out!!
.
I don't know how hot Germany is. My geography is so weak I would have to look it up.

Sorry to say Shantih. I have never vaccinated for Mareks before. Doesn't it need to be done right away? Maybe Tractor Supply has what I need.

Thanks for being prepared for not "ratting" me out to Ron but I am so good at "ratting" myself out that no one usually need to do it.....LOL
