I ordered oxine but worry about activating it. Honestly a 10/1 water vinegar solution is pretty darn affective as well.

Ecoli and salmonella are hard to kill. Activated oxine is safe as long as you aren't breathing it in. As Kim says it is safer then nailpolish.

how do you avoid breathing it in. do you mix it in a squirt bottle outside and just turn your he'd away

When im cleaning coops I put On a cheap painters mask

Jason, I had the same concerns. Really, I did. After using activated Oxine, I felt silly for being worried. It's not bad at all, hardly any odor, no harsh fumes like bleach. A painters type mask (no respirator needed) is fine.

@chiqita I'm going to laugh every time you say my name, now! Finally meeting you in person was a highlight of the party for me. I forgot to ask why you don't have an Aussie accent?

We think names should be worthy of living up to and hope that our children do so with theirs.

I love all the names!

Yeah, the vet's office struggles with it. One of the techs calls her Salad.

Salad, I haven't heard that one before

When washing eggs prior to incubation, does one use unactivated Oxine or do you use the citric acid as well?

I use unactivated, 1/4 teas. to a quart of water. I don't know if it helps, but I've only been treating eggs that I needed to wipe down for some reason. Of course last night I was reading an article about disinfecting all eggs before setting them.

Orpingtons are such smooshy, fuzzy little ones. I've had lots of Orpingtons but always got them as pullets or hens, never as fuzzy chicks until now.

I love mine, I have Jubilee, lavender, crele, black, chocolate and chocolate bantams. They truly are the fuzziest, plumpest chicks.

Shantih, I am in love with patterned birds. Especially Crele so I fell in love with the Bielefelders. Then someone came along & said I needed CLB if I like patterns & blue eggs to boot....... You see how I get in trouble......LOL So now I am going to sell my Orpingtons Blue, Blacks & even the Buff trio along with the trio of show stock Brown Leghorns I bought at Stockton & Fresno to make room for all these new breeds.
That's exciting! I'm looking forward to seeing those. I'm waiting on my late pippers today so I can set the eggs I picked up at the party :-).
Me too on the waiting part to reset the Brinsea that they are hatching in. My only concern on the Bielefelders is no one could actually tell me how heat hardy thay are. I do believe they do cold well so that is a little scary.

Yay!! I was very happy to meet you too! I am still trying to figure out in my head how to do a pig protien party I think it would be fablous. We have a vacuum sealer I bet we would need an electric meat grinder too...

@ronott1 I have something funny to tell you that I told on myself at the party.....sorry you missed it. At my last party 2 years ago I do believe you came & brought kids.............So did @PapaBrooder Jeff. For the last 2 years every time I saw your name or post I had a vision of you in my head. Only after seeing Jeff at the party this week end did I realize I had you mixed up with him. I have been thinking this whole time that Jeff was Ron Ott........LOL I told my chicken lovin friends that I need to have Ron post a picture of himself not just his chicks so I can put a face to his name. With so many new people at the first party it was lost I got mixed up I guess. I told you I am getting old...............LOL

My camera sucks (so do my photography skills) so the colors aren't showing up very true. Most of the blueish ones look a lot darker than they are.

My daughter is pointing to the chick she wants to name 'Black One'.

She knew they were going to be going into the off-limits brooder for the night, so it was tough to get any pictures without her sneaking in some petting. This picture is probably the closest to the actual color from the ones I got.

This is just one of my daughters' EEs she wanted to take a picture of when we were done with the Orpingtons.

The one hiding his face under the pale chicks is the only one who looks really black in person, so he's probably mine. My mom thinks black birds are ugly.

Super cute!

My first 2 Bielefelders are out running around in the Brinsea. Maybe I will be able to set the Pita Pinta & Dellies tomorrow.
Yea!

I just dipped the eggs. It did not take writing off and it felt like there was still bloom. I think when you dip is crucial and how clean you keep the bator matters too. Im getting mildly obsessed with egg yplk infections since chrissys all got sick at 3 weeks and that was the root cause. Wth at 3 weeks????

3 days without my new Tolbunt Polish hen laying an egg for me. She didn't lay the first day I got her, then she laid two days in a row, now 3 days without laying. I just need 4 eggs so I can drive them to Chico to have someone hatch them for me! C'mon girl...you have 4 days to lay two more eggs. Get on it!

That is great!

I brought Marans for Lucas but he could not take them because he already had too many chickens. Grand Pa was very strict with him. The Marans went to Chiquita later.

This is me with Seiji my Basque Hen Cockerel.

Hello Everybody!! Been super busy lately working on the new coop and I could use some imput. For those of you in the Sac valley area (hot and dry): what do you use on the floors of your coops? And do you use "drop boards"? I keep going back and forth between deep-litter pine shavings or sand. It' a walk-in coop with dirt floor; our soil is pretty sandy. I've read quite a bit about both but would like some practical hand-ons info from our area. Thanx as always!
Here's our progress so far!
