California - Northern

Well, depending on how long it is between parties, the kids could look completely different next time anyway

They certainly can. I watch my own grandchildren here everyday & see them change, but treasure the time I have with them. Hopefully it can be an annual thing.

Hello Everybody!! Been super busy lately working on the new coop and I could use some imput. For those of you in the Sac valley area (hot and dry): what do you use on the floors of your coops? And do you use "drop boards"? I keep going back and forth between deep-litter pine shavings or sand. It' a walk-in coop with dirt floor; our soil is pretty sandy. I've read quite a bit about both but would like some practical hand-ons info from our area. Thanx as always!
Here's our progress so far!
Been really busy with mine too but I went for something elevated so Ill be using DL with catch bins under the roosts. Maybe we can make the move of the chickens by Memorial Day. Just need to roof and paint the coop now and assemble the run. It will be nice to see the buff orps and the dels finally mixed here in June. We had all 10 running in the back yard for a bit and the little ones that are so skittish in the brooder were reluctant to leave my side. So far no serious squabbles when all are able to roam independently. I'm hoping the large run and coop will make integrating easier on everyone. The Dels will be 12 weeks this week.(any day now) and are getting huge by comparison to the orps who are ony 4 weeks behind. (I really need them outside soon)

Okay, I picked up some crushed Red Pepper and put it on the food in the feeder, hopefully she will eat it. If she does, we'll see if it works or not!

I want to give 2 thumbs up for Vetericyn Ophthalmic Gel!!! I have a little Pita Pinta chick who hatched with a problem eye. It was hardly visible and looked to be retreating into its skull. I have been cleaning that side of the chick's head with warm water and then putting Vetericyn Ophthalmic Gel in its eye twice a day and today, it had the eye open! It still has a ways to go before the eye looks normal but it has gone from hardly being able to even see the eye ball to having it open with the eye ball visible! I love Vetericyn products!

I often mix cayenne pepper powder in with the morning mash that I give my flock. I've gotten lazy since the sun comes up so much earlier and don't always give it to them but when I do it consists of layer pellets, water, plain yoghurt, kelp powder, alfalfa powder, milk thistle seed powder, cayenne powder, and some kind of shredded vegie (zucchini, kale, cucumber, etc.) or fruit (apple, berries, tomato, etc.). Sometimes I throw other things in there like chopped nuts, shredded coconut, flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. Preparing it makes me feel like I'm working for a zoo!

What are the chances that eggs shipped from Pennsylvania with be viable?

-Kathy
I have not heard bad things about Pennsylvania.

It would depend on how the eggs are packed and what breed you are getting.

Guess I should have said eggs from the east coast, lol. They shipped yesterday via USPS and are due by 3pm today.

I'm doing a pea egg swap and the person sending them has been shipping eggs for five years, so we'll see how well they are packed. She seems like a smart lady, so I'm hopeful!

Any suggestions on things I should do before setting them under a broody?

Make sure the air cells are in good shape. I would consider Incubating them for a couple of days and then put them under a broody.

Will check air cells... Only have one bator (rcom) and it has ducklings that just hatched and one egg internally pipped.
