California - Northern

Based on the feather shape and lack of color (like Ron mentioned), I'd call it a girl. I'd be highly surprised if it was a boy. They have way more color by that age in their feathers.

I'll have to get more pics of Red face Penny/Pete. My dells are in their 15th week.

She is the most aggressive to the Buffs I think the size difference is bringing on a bunch of the squabbling too. The buffs run from the others and who were not even taking notice till they ran.

Avianbiotech.com does sexing of a hatched egg shell through DNA.
I believes they also do sexing through feather and blood analysis. But at $25 a pop, a bit pricey.
Maybe they will lower the prices eventually.
But they also test for diseases as well.
Which made me think: would UC Davis offer the same DNA sexing techniques?

That is a great question!

Send them an email to see.

Hello!! I am the worst BYC member lol! I drop off the face of the earth for months! I need some help with quail.

I bought a Hovabator Genesis a couple months ago directly from the manufacturer. It came with Bobwhite quail eggs I thought nothing of them and popped them in the bator when they arrived. It did NOT even occur to me that maybe I would need a permit or something? I don't know what kind they are- it just says Bobwhite on their site. They are NOT located in Cali. So I assume they aren't Cali strains? I will call Monday though to verify. They are hatching right now. I thought I would hatch them for fun, then sell them off. I'm not sure I want to raise Bobwhites anyway. But if I need a permit...then I couldn't sell them off so that means I'm stuck with 23 (assuming all that made it to lockdown actually hatch). I'm trying not to freak out. I'm hoping someone in here can enlighten me. :D

They are the cutest little things though!

Hi Amy Beth!

They are domesticated Quail so you do not need a permit.

Sell them and get Cots from Chiqita. The Bob White take long time to start laying and etc.

Ah! So my light brahma is suddenly waddling and moving really slow. She has been laying discolored (like a bad spray paint job/gradient) and semi-flat eggs last couple weeks. Could she be egg bound? Any advice?

Woohoo, great couple days! Not only are my chickens negative for MG, but one of my two foster dogs was just adopted! He was a senior dog with medical problems so I'm really happy he was able to find a home in just a couple months. Good news just keeps coming. :)
