California - Northern

And here I am thinking of the insanity of breeding a new line of delawares.

Did you know that Kathy from MO & @capayvalleychick here in Calif. are doing that? I got my new Delaware rooster from Kim here in California & I think he is F3 or F4 already.
15-18 pea eggs under broodies pipping in the next 48 hours if all goes well!

I am cheering for you Kathy......GO..go...go...go....!!!!!!!

I know.

Ive been trying to find anything I can about the creation of the breed. There is very little out there. But it does stand to reason that the sport coloring is not a common outcome of the pairing. And may be very difficult to recreate with the very muddy bloodlines of the Barred Rocks.

I admire the work involved in taking on a project like this. Kim is very structured, a trait I have never possessed. I don't think I have the fortitude to take on such a long range meticulous project. At this time in my life I look for fun "quick" things I am able to accomplish rewarding results with....Maybe 30 years ago I might have considered something so daunting.......LOL

So, now that the chick is dry and I could get a better look, it definitely has something wrong with the leg. It has trouble walking because of how the leg/foot is positioned. What is wrong with it, and how do I fix it?

I have had good success using sheer bandaids. I cut off the sticky ends and spread the toes out on top of one of them sticking the toes down in a natural spread position. Then I sandwich the toes with the other sticky end and make sure the two pieces of bandaid are pressed together in between the toes. I change it every couple of days. It really, really helps to have 2 people when you do this and the sooner the better. Make sure you keep its toes bandaged for several days or even a week before seeing if it has worked. Once you take it off, watch carefully for any relapse and bandage it again at the first sign of curling. I would also recommend giving the chick some vitamins.

I about had a heart attack last night when closing up. 2 more barnevelders were on the nest. (I already have 6 broodies) Thankfully this morning, those 2 were off the nest. Next broody hatches her babies Monday.

Broody power!!! Broodies unite!!! I thought that I was done with broodies for the season and then my ditsy BW Ameraucana decided to jump on the bandwagon. She is a ditsy blonde and not a very good egg layer but a great mom so I gave her 8 mystery eggs from the farm. 2 days later, my big CL mix Annie decided she was ready for round 2. She was my first broody this year. I hope that the others don't get the same idea!
