Hi, NorCal peeps!Humboldt Co chicken mama here, originally from Modesto!
So sorry, Kim! Why do these things seem to come in waves?I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm feeling like I never want to hatch anything ever again. I had eggs in the RCom, eggs in the Genesis, and under 3 broodies. Early on, the Genesis humidity kept fluctuating from 19-69%, so I took those eggs and put them in the RCom. One of the broodies didn't stick, so I lost those eggs.
Then, when I upped the humidity prior to hatch on the RCom, the temperature kept shooting up over 100-102. I unplugged & reset it twice, but it would not stay below 100. So, I put all those eggs under the broody whose eggs had not hatched. The third broody did hatch out 6-8 chicks. I just finished pulling out all the full term dead chicks from under the broody who had the RCom eggs.
In addition, I had 2 chicks and a pig die from the heat. I'm not a happy farmer at the moment. Too much death for me to keep a stiff upper lip.
Orlando needs some of his own CL ladies! He makes the best babies!!! I have a group of them running around my yard and they are fantastic layers of beautiful blue eggs! 2 of them have gone broody and raised chicks this year and 1 of them is ready to do it again!Chiqita only has Orlando the wonder roo with the bullhorn that can be heard 2 miles down the creek. His crazy fertility is being wasted on hens that no longer lay its a crime.
If it gets there you can scrape most of the wax off when the humidity goes up.
2 pullets. Males are more white and gray.
The first imports were not correctly marked. So they imported the top lines from Rees. These are supposed to be correctly marked.Anyone know what gff's Rees cream legbars are about? I'm assuming new blood. They are more expensive. What's the hype?
You go girl go...............I wouldn't want to be you taking care of all those chicks & grow outs in this heat. I hope they all do well for you. It's going to be a long night around here, I have pips & zips with lots of peeps galore! They are all from "party" eggs I bartered/won/was gifted or coerced into hatching
Ms Dyann... I'm pretty jazzed as I have @chiqita Bresse, @Chooklet Cochin, @PetRock Pita Pinta and from @Sueg4332 Salmon Faverolle and Wheaten Marans! Hatch day excitement never gets old.![]()
Kim, I am so sorry. I hate being disillusioned over something I love to do. Bad hatches are so disappointing. Please don't give up. When the hatches are good the rewards are great & you will feel so exhilarated.I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm feeling like I never want to hatch anything ever again. WELCOME.........I was born in Modesto more years than I care to admit, but for the last 35 years have lived in Turlock. Where did you live in Modesto? What chickens are you raising now?Hi, NorCal peeps!Humboldt Co chicken mama here, originally from Modesto!

Good Luck with your remaining eggs! That is great you got so much development!I don't think I posted it in this thread, but just to 'test' my Brinsea (yeah, I'm already justifying hatches lol) I put in some TJ eggs, hoping to get a White Leghorn or two to add to my flock. Had some issues- temps shot up to 102 on day five, husband jostled it and cracked two eggs, but STILL some of these seem to be developing. I set seven eggs (marked L, E, G, H, O, R and N). H and O seem to be duds, no veins at all a week in. The other five have veins and little black eye spots, and just in the super quick candling (maybe ten seconds per egg) I definitely saw movement in G, R and N. Yay! I know it is too soon to fret over it, but I'm already stressing that if a cracked egg makes it to hatch the poor chick is going to try to pip through the wax I think I put on too thickly. ugh... we'll see.
Very exciting! That is going to be a beautiful brooder! It's going to be a long night around here, I have pips & zips with lots of peeps galore! They are all from "party" eggs I bartered/won/was gifted or coerced into hatching

Hi, NorCal peeps!Humboldt Co chicken mama here, originally from Modesto!
One of my Australorps lays eggs with calicified "stars" all over the outside of the egg she also often doesn't close the shell either. it is odd she lays down extra shell in some spots and not enough on the end. Anyway, just wanted to share that my girl has done it for ever too.I've been reading the last few days--I just haven't said anything.... So--Congrats on hatches, I'm so sorry for losses, and welcome to the new people (and returnees)!
I got a new phone a couple weeks ago, and have just tonight realized that the simplest way to get photos (at least without going and getting a usb cord, which takes forever) would be to email myself. So, pictures! Eek, sorry they came in huge--I told the uploader "Medium"...
Anyway, these first 2 are of an egg I got on 6/2. I don't think it was pecked--no cracks, the membrane was whole, and the edges are smooth. I guess the shell just didn't get secreted all over![]()

@BCollie I have enjoyed your infectious enthusiasm about your hatch and am so happy that your chick's foot fixed itself. It is nice to see such happiness when you have had had such a rough go lately.
