My chickens are the all time champs for bailing out food.

I bought a pan at Tractor Supply big enough to catch the food and fit the feeder, but not too big- because the chickens need to reach the feeder.

It works great! My chickens feeder is 10lbs. And every day I go outside mix in some fresh "secret recipe" in their food the bailed into the pan and re-put it in the feeder. Although, their food will get stale like ours. So I dump out the old food after 3 days of rotation and put in some fresh food.

We homeschool too. Makes us extra weird. :p My family although they giggle- respect our choices so I have that! :D How old are your kids?
I'll chime in here with we homeschool, too! My oldest 5 kids are out of the house so the only one left is Monet who is 11 and will be in 6th grade. It's fun to hear that there are several of us strange people on this thread!

I figured you guys and gals might Like to see some cute little chickies early this morning. These are the chicks from my first incubation last week.
They are Rhode Island Red x Dorking/Americuana.
They really are some of the coolest chicks I've had so far. They are super docile, I guess since I hatched them myself they are used to seeing me since the cracked out of their shells. Their coloring on the back and wings is really neat. I can tell the take a lot from the fathers genes.
I'm gonna keep a couple but I'm lookih for homes for the rest of them (hint hint)

Have a good morning everyone!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!

Sheesh! The day before yesterday I had to wear a longsleeve and some mittens because it was so cold. (50 degrees!)

And today and yesterday have been flaming gorgeous! A nice 70 degrees for once!~

If you want your eggs to be pure, then you will want to rotate free range time. If you let them run together, you'd have to separate and then wait 3-4 weeks for them to be pure.

Guess I'm weird too. I homeschool my oldest (12) - he asked me in 5th grade to homeschool him. So I did for 6th last year and now we're starting on 7th. My youngest isn't homeschooled yet, but probably will in another year or so. (he's 4th grade right now) He fights too much with his brother right now.
I assumed I would need a breeding pen and to keep them separated. I don't mind that. I would prefer that the whole flock be together free ranging daily for the most part. I don't plan on being a big breeder. Maybe a couple hens (1 from each breed I want at the time) in the Spring/Summer and that's it. Having a ton of coops for various breeds is too expensive for us right now. Plus buying more waterers and feeders- whew. I'm tapped out for now. I have birthdays for the kids coming up. Maybe over the years as we see what breeds we want, if we want to go anywhere with this or just keep it to ourselves and provide for our family only...

Aw that is so nice you did that for him! I wish I had been homeschooled. School (especially high school) was too much for me. Bad home life + being a teen = a messy teen life and quitting school. I eventually went back but high school is hard. Academics is the easy part! LOL

We were looking at chicken breeds the other day and my husband saw the Jersey Giants and was extremely impressed with their size. We couldn't afford to feed them but he was impressed!

I have decided I really need to process more often. I really like the flavor of the chickn & have a friend that just loves to take it home & make chicken & dumplings when I do process. It is pure laziness & poor time management that causes me not to do more of it. I end up taking my grown out cockerels to the auction in Modesto & usually get $10, $12 & $15. each for them but there is a 30% commission charge. It is better than keep feeding them if I am not going to get around to processing them though. That much less to feed.
I had some lady call yesterday & ask if I had any $2 chickens?????? I certainly would eat them if that's all I could get. I would give them away to friends & other BYCer before I sold them for that......LOL
