I went out to give the 2 new banties some chopped organic dandelion greens...I left and now the rooster is crowing. Is he saying yummy, thank you, come back, stay away? LOL
Hi Amy Beth,

He is announcing that the food is here. Does he make little chirps, pick up some food and drop it for the hen?

So Cute!

Why yes is he is! My son was remarking that he keeps messing with the food and crowing. Oh my goodness how adorable is THAT! (such gentlemen these roosters are for their ladies)

Ok some comb pics- I didn't have the right kind of lens on. It was getting dark out and I had to use a certain lens to let in more light and it doesn't allow me to get real close. (click on them to see them larger)

These are both clearly dudes. My pullets have no combs to speak of at this age and what they do have is really pale with very little wattle.

Another male BUT I am pretty darn sure this one of my black orp/fbcm mixes. The feathers look Orp-ish. He's dinner- I don't think I want to keep a mixed rooster. His comb looks funky anyway.

These are all Copper. I don't think he is good enough to be breeding stock- but we are very attached to him.

The feathers on the legs are doing what they are supposed to. I love the actions photos too.

Copper has one clean leg, one leg has like one feather. Copper has stunning colors so far but has dark black eyes. Samson has gorgeous golden eyes, super feathery feet but so far- dull feather coloring. I know they are still young yet. Do breeders ever keep 2 roosters for 1 breed for various characteristics to breed into their stock? Plus white on their feathers is a huge no-no/DQ right?

If you only have one Rooster, then you lose a lot of time before you can get another one. Keep the best two, but you really won't know which is best until after they molt--next year. Who knew improving Heritage chickens would be such a long term project.

Woo. Ok so maybe I keep Samson and Copper both haha! I am still looking at the cockerels we have the of BCM- but their combs are just not as perfectly formed as the other boys were EARLY on. I see 1 more contender who resembles a smaller Samson (younger) with feathery feet but dark eyes so maybe I will watch him. But the rest have to go in a few weeks. I'm def gonna need more coops. rofl

Non chicken picture alert- care to weigh in? I was asked to submit a couple images to a photography mag. I am unable which I like the best...I am a BW girl at heart and love that about half of my pro work is BW but the color is sweet too...thanks for your help! Two different 'poses' but one is bw and one is color. I would love to see which you all prefer. <3 (i clicked on them and they look sorta funky on here. just ignore that.)

I way prefer the B/W. I find the color out the door distracting and it makes your eye stop short. The B/W doesn't have that problem and allows your eye to lead further into the photo (I do a bit of competitive photography as well). With the B/W, I find myself looking all the way to the furthest wall.
