When will you have the white empordanesa? They're dark egg layers right? I still have an EE mom hatching now so I'd love to give her some chicks. Plus I have two moms raising Polish that were born over the last week and a half. Do you have any chicks or does anyone have any DARK laying chicks I could add to any of these chicks so I don't have to raise them?

Ok. Wow. Banty rooster and hen on my back porch. That dude starts in at like 530 am? Keeps going....well it's almost 9 now? Now he's not bothering me and I do have neighbors that have roosters (so they have no right to complain right??) but I think he might annoy my mil. I am sure it will turn the volume down when we put them in with the other chickens (which is a fair distance from the house). If HE is that loud- what about the other roosters I want to keep? (Joe, Samson and Copper?) Is it going to sound like a madhouse over here?

I think the bantams are louder than most Large fowl roosters. My roosters start at roughly 5:30, so that's normal. Basically the second there is ANY light, they will start crowing. And when you have multiple roosters and one crows, the others will counter with theirs.

In the winter it's not such a big deal - but in summer, you have a natural alarm clock. Hope your coop isn't too close to the house!

It's actually not close to the house at ALL. I should take a pic to show you all from my back porch. It is however very close to the fence...and our neighbors. (who also have chickens and a rooster lol). Man that banty is loud. Good to know about noise level. Whew! haha

For those of you who are now or planning on selling eggs in the future, here's a website that you can register with so people who want eating eggs in your area can find you. http://localhens.com/why-choose-local/ Good information too. Also, this is a link I post periodically on my facebook page for my farm, it's a great article from Mother Earth News on the value of free range eggs and how much better they are for you. http://www.motherearthnews.com/eggs.aspx Might help some of you who are worried about the risk in free ranging feel like it may be worth it.
Thanks for that post Pam. You always seem to post some helpful info. Does anyone know what kind of bug this is? My chickens found a stash of them. They are pretty gnarly looking and I just wanted to make sure they are safe to eat.

Quote: Looks like a cucumber beetle.

They can eat them.

Correction, it looks like a Ten Lined June Beetle. Also called a watermelon beetle. I can't find any thing particular about them being bad for chickens, so I would not worry about it.

Hey you mad bakers! Can someone realist the angel food cake and curd recipes for me? I'm feeling like turning on the oven. I just made an awesome Asian pair slaw that needs a friend.

That's funny, I just took a bunch of pictures of the same exact bug when I was in Tahoe a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was very cool, it was out on our balcony. It eventually got annoyed with me and flew away.

My Crele penedesenca are not yet laying. The white Emp's are of laying age.
Once they get here next week I want them to get settled in some and will try and hatch some. Then I will offer both eggs and chicks
