Unfortunately, no. I bought hatching eggs & there was a bit of a language barrier. They did not seem inclined at all for me to see their flock.
I had not seen a splash marked like her before. It's like someone shook pepper on her in addition to only 3-4 larger marked feathers.
She looks like my khaki, splash marked pullet. She is not a true splash, but that is what I call her color since it is similar. My pullet is a cross between my WC chocolate cuckoo hen and my buff laced rooster.

Please note that I am not a doctor or medical person, but I'll take a shot with translating the autopsy:

Penny succumbed to a bacterial infection originating in her oviducts (egg tubes). BUT it also looks like perhaps ovarian cancer was starting (pink fleshy nodules) as a very, very minor factor....that or the nodules were what were causing the irritation and infection in the oviducts. The paleness of her muscles is indicative of her body shutting down, as is the swelled nature of her lungs. Not so sure of what the liver spots are, but could be an offshoot of the infection (as the liver and kidneys are the body's filter) . Autolysis, if I recall, means she was having a reaction to her own body, usually the body was trying to fight and assimilate dead cells, like tissue diseased by the infection trying to be dissolved which results in LOTS and LOTS of toxic wastes. This could be the infection, that her antibodies were turning on her. In any event, the toxicity probably resulted in shock which caused her body to shut down.

In short, Penny had a problem in the egg-producing area, got sick, couldn't recover and died.

So sorry for the loss of your hen. Please post further what the vet/necropsy results show.

I don't know how I missed this post. Thank you for interpreting.

Adventures in Foster Broodies, part 7

I took Sybil's foster babies back to @chiqita this past weekend. It was fun watching them grow up. And Sybil has started laying eggs again!

I tried to give new foster babies to Rosie, who went broody a month ago. But it did not go as well. I lost all three chicks.

I think the other hens might have trampled them. I feel bad for Rosie, who was still sitting on her dead babies. But she has to get locked in a wire bottomed cage now, because she's lost 20% of her weight so far.

In some ways it is a relief to be back to my own little flock of six. I was heartbroken about Rosie's foster babies, and felt terrible that they were chiqita's. I hope Sybil's foster babies do well back at their birth home.

They are so cute!

It is sad when a broody does not accept the chicks. Do you think it has something to do with the color or pattern?

I don't really know what happened to them. There was no obvious external injury, so I can only guess it was internal injuries. Rosie wasn't separated from the rest of the flock, and I know at least one other hen was in that corner at some point. So maybe the chicks got hurt in some scuffle.

That makes sense!

How is the Garden this year?

Its coming along in fits and starts. The yo-yo weather patterns have not helped things too much. I just got my first Cantaloupe the other day and it was good. Finally harvested the potatoes. Bell peppers are coming along nicely. Squash not doing so nice this year I think where I moved them too isnt working.

Onions went to seed really fast this year. My cherry tomatoes are very small this year. They seem to ripen too quickly. Whereas my romas and others are not bearing as much fruit as last year and taking forever to ripen.(What I dont lose to rats)

Asparagus bed is not as productive this year (2nd year in) Strawberries had all kinds of problems and have died off again.
Time to start thinking about my august plantings.

What will you be planting in August? We blew it this year and haven't done anything, so I'm looking for some suggestions. :D

It has been a weird year for weather. I hope the asparagus does better next year. I thing @Happy Chooks has asparagus too.

I need to think about august too. I did not plant a Garden this spring but should get a Fall\winter crop going.
