California - Northern

What will you be planting in August? We blew it this year and haven't done anything, so I'm looking for some suggestions.

Last year I planted broccoli, peas, carrots and potatoes. i also tried cabbages but they didnt make it. All of these had finished by early spring. (I let the potatoes go more because they are in almost constant rotation except the really hot months)
Ill probably do the same again. Might see if my butternut squash will make it into the winter this year might add some acorn squash as Im told it does better in cool weather.

Ill start seeds in late august for planting around mid to late sept. Ill also plant garlic and probably try growing onion from seed as the cycle for onions is long.

Im looking for some more things to try. My garden is mostly experimentation to figure out how to grow a particular thing so if I had to survive on my own Id know how.

Quote: Yep, I have asparagus. Mine did fine this winter, but it was it's first year of production. (I planted 2 year old crowns) It's not supposed to produce well until it's 3rd year.

Right now, I'm getting Swiss chard, kale, tomatoes are starting to ripen, bell peppers, potatoes (need to dig soon, they already flowered), cucumbers, snap peas, green beans, a couple of hot peppers, raspberries, strawberries and a boatload of squash.

Spinach and Kale are good winter crops too. I have yet to have good luck with spinach, but I keep trying. I might have to try to grow Napa cabbage this year - that stuff is delicious! I have a hard time with my winter garden, because I don't want to pull up plants that are producing to put winter crops in.

I can post tons right now c: I love my little Crackers! Unsure of gender but that's its name c:

Thanks for the pictures.

Ducklings are very cute!

Are you going to get a friend or two for company?

Its coming along in fits and starts. The yo-yo weather patterns have not helped things too much. I just got my first Cantaloupe the other day and it was good. Finally harvested the potatoes. Bell peppers are coming along nicely. Squash not doing so nice this year I think where I moved them too isnt working.

Onions went to seed really fast this year. My cherry tomatoes are very small this year. They seem to ripen too quickly. Whereas my romas and others are not bearing as much fruit as last year and taking forever to ripen.(What I dont lose to rats)

Asparagus bed is not as productive this year (2nd year in) Strawberries had all kinds of problems and have died off again.
Time to start thinking about my august plantings.

It has been a weird year for weather. I hope the asparagus does better next year. I thing @Happy Chooks
 has asparagus too.

I need to think about august too. I did not plant a Garden this spring but should get a Fall\winter crop going.

I'm going to try planting a second crop of potatoes. My early spring planting did well and I hope to get more by planting some the end of this month. I also will try a second planting of carrots. We are still enjoying the first bunch, but will run out soon. So, for an august planting I'm hoping to find room in the garden for some carrots, potatoes, peas and garlic:)

I started building a " mini- coop" to house a " bachelor coop " or conditioning a show bird. Got the basic frame work done this morning. It is 4 ft wide, 3ft deep and 3 ft tall.

That sounds like a great idea!

I just got an email for OSH--Club Orchard members get 20% off of "everything thing that Grows" starting tomorrow! I will have to go there and see what they have.

Thanks for the pictures.

A girl on here has ducklings that need a home but she lives in Arizona and I live in Cali. I'm hoping to have two of those but I'm not sure if I can get them

I have planted potatoes ONCE. I dig them, and every year miss some little sprout, and up they come again next year.

I do want to try those purple potatoes though. I have Red and Yukon Gold.
