You can't use seeds with any coating on your lawn if you have either. Or you shouldn't. It makes resedding or buying sod a pita. Id like to break down and resod if we get a el nino this year but im uncertain I can find safe sod.
You can find grass seeds that are not coated but most lawn grass now has grass that produce alkaloids to make them bug resistant. It is not clear to me if this grass is bad for chickens or not. I do give mine lawn clippings from grass grown from seeds that were not coated but they do produce the alkaloids. The eggs are fine and fertility has been good this year.

You may be better using a pasture blend of some type:

Daughter of peaches!! Thats a nice looking chicken. I think my black hens are my highest quality.
I have two Black OE Hens from your place--One of them is broody and is not happy when I remove the eggs. She pecked me 4 times yesterday.

I may have to put her into a wire cage.....

Does anyone know why this chick might have a lump on one side of it;s skull? These chicks are 1 week old and this on hatched from a FBCM egg. When It first hatched I thought it was from a silkie egg and had a vaulted skull, but there were only 3 eggs total that hatched..or even pipped. 1 was the Bresse, one was the showgirl and one from a dark Marans egg. The lump is on the chicks right side of the skull. It seems fine in every other way (except for pasty butt...I gave scrambled eggs, plain yogurt and chick grit yesterday. Still pasty this morning). It is active ans alert. It eats/drinks, interacts with the other chicks. The lump feels firm and does not move. In fact...it feels very much like the skull on the showgirl chick, but it is only on the one side.

If that is a vaulted skull, you will have some awesome feathers!

If you are feeling brave, maybe venture over to the Marans thread and ask if they have seen vaulted skulls on Marans before.

Make sure they don't have bee killing plants.
Ducklings are adorable! But they 100% need friends.

I have a silkie sitting on some muscovy eggs if you get desperate. Male ducks need to be either isolated or have acess to female ducks. Male ducks have anatomy that is dangerous to chickens.

Silkie chickens? I don't know if I can handle chickens. A rooster is what killed his siblings and broke his wing and leg. :( I'd happily take in two ducks though. Just need to make sure I can keep up

URGENT - birds need adoption/rescue!

My DH's nephew died unexpectedly about 10 days ago. He and his partner lived in San Juan Bautista. I got a call from his partner Ray today, and Ray is desperate - he has no money for feed, or anything else, since the nephew handles all finances. The estate is going to be tied up for a while because there's no Will, and they never registered as domestic partners. Ray is infirm and not too sharp. He can't really take care of himself, let alone the animals. He wants to move back to family in Oklahoma as soon as possible. In the meantime he is super stressed trying to find someone that will take their birds.

They have:

18 pet chickens living in their house, mostly Seramas and Silkies. One is setting (serama) on 12 eggs.
One 20lb rooster with a broken toe that he said was a "legger" - he is a house pet at the moment too.
7 more chickens outside, presumably hens

1 african swan goose
2 chinese geese - mated pair
1 blue-eyed gander, 2 hens, a three month old gosling
2 other geese
3 ducks

25 rabbits mostly lops, or lop/angora mixes. some might have jack rabbit (you can guess how that happened)
two lion faced angoras - a black doe, and her blue-eyed white furred son

If you think you can take any or all of these animals, or know of a rescue organization that can, please reply ASAP. I suspect that their living conditions are deteriorating, and Ray is desperate to not turn them over to the county.

Thank you so much -

Kande

kande, what a horrible situation so sorry for the loss of a loved one ....

do you happen to have any photo's of these birds or rabbits as it would be a very fast way for people to see what you have and will greatly aid in someone rescuing them thus reliving a Burdon one and bring joy to another .....
