I buy all my veggie/flower seeds online from certified Non-GMO / Organic farmers; haven't done grass seed yet but am working on filling the lawn area with St. Augustine grass to eliminate the need to reseed every year.NPR had a Segment on that recently. Just for information, several studies have shown that the coating on seeds, which is a neve toxin that comes from the same nicotine in cigarettes may be the main cause of colony decline in bees. The plant grown from the coated seed has the poison in it! Then there is the bug spray the plants are sprayed with.
But get this! One coated corn seed will kill a sparrow if eaten. A small bit will weaken the egg shell and cause fertility problems. What is the cause of the low fertility in our chickens over the past several years? Maybe some breeds are more sensitive to the poison effects. I wonder if places close to planted fields or even feeding the chickens greens that have the poison in it is a cause?
Nicaloids are banned in Europe.
I've also read that the spray will kill 90-95% of all amphibians that come in contact with the residue. Nasty stuff; I wish the US would get with the program and place everyones well being above the almighty Dollar but...I'll stop now.
IYou can't use seeds with any coating on your lawn if you have either. Or you shouldn't. It makes resedding or buying sod a pita. Id like to break down and resod if we get a el nino this year but im uncertain I can find safe sod.
For the record; I drove up to get them. Hour and 15 mins in the car and almost half were pulled out of the nesting boxes while I was there. I cracked one of the "clear" bantams (the other 3 I left in the bator to recheck on day 10) and it looked like it quit on day 3 or soWow! That's great!. I'm not sure my Papa Brooder eggs have fared as well.
Thanks for the link! You can find grass seeds that are not coated but most lawn grass now has grass that produce alkaloids to make them bug resistant. It is not clear to me if this grass is bad for chickens or not. I do give mine lawn clippings from grass grown from seeds that were not coated but they do produce the alkaloids. The eggs are fine and fertility has been good this year.
You may be better using a pasture blend of some type:
