California - Northern

Hello all,
Crazy summer here! Discovered I was almost 2,000 posts behind. Well I am just skipping them :)

Thrilled to say that I've finally learned to hatch the difficult SFH. That feels like a major accomplishment! Also our CCL are hatching out heavy on the girl side. One hatch I had 7 girls and 2 boys (10 eggs @ lockdown so I'm still not at the elusive 100% hatch!). Recently we had 5 boys out of 11 chicks. That is really fun to hatch and see what you get right away! I'm now thinking of all the different sex link chickens I can do.

And @ronott1 this photo is for you. The EOB you sold me is still up and kicking (literally, he is afraid of everything, when I toss fruit in the pen he attacks it) and now we have chicks. Lots of little round - chubby!! - chicks. We are just loving how chunky they are and how well they hatch!

What is an SFH? Swedish Flower Hen?

What is a CCL? Crested Cream Leghorn?

Why don't breeders interested in rare birds ever take up our American breeds? The Dominiques, the Buckeyes, the Javas?
I don't think it is related to earning a profit because fancy poultry is rarely profitable.
What is it?

I think the answer is in the title "Fancy"

I'm new to chickens but I have Delawares not a breeder yet but that's only a matter of time.

My only interest in the Crested Cream Legbars are the blue eggs. Just too cool.

Yes and almost, it's Crested Cream Legbar.

I think people just raise the breeds that take their interest. For American breeds I raise several breeds developed here. Including I used to raise Iowa Blues, a nearly extinct breed developed here. I enjoyed them, but when I needed to cut back they were one of the breeds that went.

I did sell my entire breeding flock to one person that wanted to carry on the work with them, so my group will continue on in Oregon.

Hello ALL and particularly to "Ronott 1",
Care to say exactly how to get to the Roseville Poultry Auction? It might be the thing to visit to see if I can locate some of the birds I desire. There used to be one near here in Wilton but the insurance wags scared them out of business. Don't you just love those fear mongering ambulance chasing destroyers of a good thing? It was fun going to that particular auction, but no more, alas…
I wish ALL of you a great time, wellness and yes, contentment,
Neal, the Zooman
P.S. Could it be that your name is actually Ron Ott?

The Iowa Blue that is also known as "Pheasant Fowl?"

I have a yard full of Dominiques, known as the Keystone Koop for reasons obvious to silent movie fans who have ever met a Dominique.

Someone needs to do an outreach to the Basque Cultural organizations in Nevada, and the rest of the Great Basin and intermountain states regarding Basque fowl. You don't see them in the backyard flocks there.

My name is Ron Ottman. It used to have a Junior on the end but I have dropped that now.

The Auction is near Denios Farmers market and auction in Roseville.

Here is an article about the auction:

I like that idea!

Thanks. I do wonder if those of Basque heritage know about them.

Hi Cay Chris, et al,
I see you are reasonably close to my location. I used to live in Concord before buying the Acampo ranch so I am familiar with your region. I see that you have Delawares, maybe? Any to sell? What about other breeds? I'm looking for bearded silkies, Cockerel Barred Plymouth Rocks, cockerel White Rocks, male and female Swedish teen agers, etc. You may call me if you like. I don't worry about the commercial calls anymore as I taught a couple of them lessons they never anticipated and the rest leave me alone. I think the word gets around. So I freely give out my phone number and answer those which reveal their true number. Yes, you and any of the private poultry types are invited to call.
Stay well and contented,
Neal, the Zooman

I'm located in the city but looking for some land where I can set up breeding pens etc. Sorry no breeds for sale unless you want some hatchery buff orps. (the breed tends to go broody so they might make good mothers eventually) I might have a Delaware Cockerel he is a project bird from @fortyfivefarm 's line. Has quite a bit of barring still. I have 4 Delaware hens that almost POL that I got from the feed store (Privet Hatchery stock) I love them. This was before I knew anything.(not that I know much now) I want to start breeding some but without the space it has to wait.
I may give you a call tonight after work.
